Job summary

Northumbria University is recruiting a full-time technician based in the Faculty of Science and Environment, supporting the School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics and the School of Architecture and Built Environment. The role involves maintaining laboratories and workshops, stocking, safety, and assisting with practical taught sessions and research projects.

Based in the Ellison Building on the City Centre Campus, the technician will work with Senior Technicians to support diverse users

Job description

We are recruiting a full time technician post based in the Faculty of Science and Environment supporting the the School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics and the School of Architecture and Built Environment .

The role holder will work with stakeholders across these areas, but there will be a focus on support towards the Civil Engineering and the Built Environment departments.

The role holder will support stakeholders ranging from undergraduate students to research staff. This will be by supporting the Senior Technicians in maintaining laboratories and workshops to a high standard, ensuring they are well stocked and safe for users for practical taught sessions and research projects.

A large part of this role is to work within an equipment store, using our inventory software to distribute equipment to staff and students to support their work and ensuring it is checked on return.

The role holder will have the opportunity to work across all areas the technical team support which include laboratories and workshops with metal working, wood working, 3D printing, electronics many more.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Working across both the School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics and the School of Architecture and Built Environment, both in the Faculty of Science and Environmental, the technical team offer support to a wide range of studios, laboratories and workshops providing excellent learning and research environments to all of our stakeholders.

The successful candidate will based in Ellison Building, City Centre Campus and will work alongside other Technicians and Senior Technicians covering the disciplines offered by the schools supported.

The successful candidate will be qualified to level 2 and have experience in a discipline related to the role. Experience of working in a university and customer service experience would be beneficial, as would work in the field of civil engineering.

You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to guide, train and support a diverse range of users, from students and early-career researchers to experienced academics and external partners. You will be equally comfortable working independently and contributing as part of a collaborative technical team.

Strong organisational skills and a willing attitude are essential in the role.
