My client, a well-respected, privately owned student accommodation provider covering the UK and Ireland in 24 cities with a portfolio worth 1.5 billion, is seeking to hire a Facilities Manager. The role is remote, managing multiple sites in the South of England, with travel to sites a couple of days per week.

Overview

The Facilities Manager ensures the effective delivery and ongoing management of Facilities Management services across the company's national property portfolio. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe, clean, and well-functioning estate, overseeing planned and reactive maintenance, ensuring statutory compliance (especially in Health & Safety), managing in-house teams and external FM contracts, participating in tender processes, overseeing budgets, and monitoring service performance. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a proactive, customer-focused approach are essential.

Main Accountabilities

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Health & Safety legislation and internal policies across all managed sites.
  • Resolve property-related issues promptly and execute maintenance to standards.
  • Deliver cost-effective Facilities Management services, demonstrating value for money.
  • Manage FM-related contracts effectively, including mobilisation and performance management.
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and compliance registers.
  • Improve site standards, tenant satisfaction, and operational efficiency continuously.
  • Adhere to budgets and manage FM-related costs responsibly.
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, contractors, and site staff.
  • Provide a customer-focused, proactive facilities service aligned with company standards.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe, clean, and efficient operation of properties, focusing on Health & Safety and compliance.
  • Manage planned and reactive maintenance across mechanical, electrical, and fabric works.
  • Conduct site visits, identify issues, specify and oversee works, and sign off completed projects.
  • Lead or assist in FM tender cycles, including specifications, mobilisation, and performance evaluation.
  • Monitor and manage FM service contracts for quality, value, and compliance.
  • Keep records of equipment condition, maintenance, and compliance documentation.
  • Support and supervise on-site Facilities Assistants.
  • Stay updated on legislative and regulatory changes affecting facilities and update processes accordingly.
  • Assist in the annual Service Charge budgeting and oversee FM-related spending and purchase approvals.
  • Provide reports and recommendations on FM performance, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

Person Specification

  • PBSA experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience in site management, with attention to detail and ability to effect change.
  • Experience in a similar role with responsibility for facilities management.
  • Proven ability to meet challenging targets and objectives.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety issues; IOSH / NEBOSH qualification preferred.
  • Financial and commercial awareness, with the ability to analyse information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • A motivated, target-oriented team player with a positive attitude and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
