Facilities Assistant / Caretaker

Location: Hackney
Hours: 7AM-3PM
Contract Type: Temp to Perm



About the Role:

We are seeking a reliable and hands-on Facilities Assistant / Caretaker to support the smooth day-to-day operations of our school site. This vital role ensures our buildings are safe, clean, and fully functional for pupils, staff, and visitors.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Open and lock the school premises daily, including gates and buildings

  • Carry out general maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., door handles, fixtures, furniture)

  • Perform routine safety and compliance checks (e.g., fire alarms, emergency lighting, legionella)

  • Support health and safety compliance across the site

  • Maintain clear and safe external areas (e.g., playgrounds, car parks, pathways)

  • Monitor and log maintenance issues using checklists or manual logs

  • Liaise with contractors and report issues to the Facilities Manager or SLT



Experience & Skills:

  • Previous experience in a handy-person / caretaker / site assistant role

  • Basic knowledge of Health & Safety and COSHH regulations

  • Understanding of safeguarding and working within school environments

  • Comfortable using manual logs or basic compliance systems (e.g. CAFM - desirable but not essential)



Personal Qualities:

  • Hands-on, physically fit, and able to carry out manual tasks

  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic

  • Team player with a proactive attitude

  • Able to work independently and take initiative



Requirements:

  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)

  • Awareness of safeguarding procedures

  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing priorities
