Pay: £28,154 p.a / £14.63 PAYE

Location: Site based - the successful applicant will be required to be based at Stanley Ferry, Wakefield

Working hours: 37 hours a week, 07:30am to 16:00 Monday to Thursday, and 07:30 to 12:30 on Fridays

We require a fabricator/welder in our fitting department, manufacturing steel work for our lock gate production. Each gate is bespoke and requires a specific amount of steel work that needs to be fabricated and welded together. The role involves all aspects of fabrication, using both manual and machine tools like radial arm drills, Digi banding machines, and hand tools.

About the role
Responsibilities/Job:
  • Comply with Canal & River Trust's Health & Safety policy, report incidents, accidents, and near misses. Complete risk assessments for non-routine tasks and adjust work methods accordingly.
  • Use carpentry/joinery or fabricator/welder expertise to manufacture & refurbish within defined standards and timelines. Work outdoors when required.
  • Operate machinery, plant, tools, and equipment safely, supporting in-house maintenance where appropriate.
  • Maintain personal equipment, workshop tools, and workspace to defined standards.
  • Respond promptly to customer queries and emergencies.
  • Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials) is suitable for tasks.
  • Assist in measuring locks and lock gates to determine correct dimensions for manufacturing, working alongside experienced specialists to learn this heritage skill.
  • Interpret technical drawings to translate into production.
Skills/Qualifications/Experience:
  • Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification (e.g., City & Guilds Level III, NVQ Level III in Fabrication/Welding) or relevant experience.
  • Experience handling plant/equipment such as chainsaws, hand power tools, forklift trucks.
  • Experience working in fabrication/welding disciplines.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Full valid UK driving licence to respond across the region as needed.
