Job summary

Galliford Try Group seeks a Fabrication Design Manager to lead the fabrication design team across flexible UK locations. You will work with operations to align with GT vision, manage health and safety, and ensure design solutions meet client and statutory requirements.

Role: Fabrication Design Manager

Location: Various/Flexible

To support the growth of the fabrication business, the business is looking to restructure and place a design manager overseeing the fabrication design department to work as part of the GT Fabs design team

What you’ll be doing:
  • Work in conjunction with the Operations Director to form excellent relationships with the Fabrication management team, ensuring alignment through operational bases, maintaining a strong focus on the GT vision, values and culture.
  • We’re seeking a strong leader with experience of working in the fabrication and welding industry who has successfully managed and developed teams, with the confidence to communicate with members of project delivery: in house, sub-contractors, clients and suppliers.
  • Be the lead on Health and Safety, keeping up to date with latest legislation, company policies, training and statutory requirements.
  • Always ensure alignment with key Client’s vision through delivery of the contracts, and ensure solutions are delivered sustainably with cost and carbon opportunities realised.
  • Ensure compliance with all company commercial and financial procedures, review and complete contract documentation.
  • Coordinate the operational delivery of projects by managing the fabrication design team.
  • Flexibility, resilience, and the ability to influence and build relationships with key stakeholders. Demonstrating strong ethical standards with openness and honesty.
  • Analysis of cost and value to ensure budgets are maintained and staff are efficiently utilised by effectively managing resource, supply chain, and planning to meet changing requirements.
  • Maintain and build a high performing team through recruitment, training, mentoring, and communication, ensuring everyone is aware of their own personal responsibilities and outputs, in doing to identify areas for improvement and manage performance issues.
  • Ensure rigorous processes aligned to BS EN 1090 & 3834 and the Business Management system (BMS) are developed and maintained that result in positive outcomes.
  • Liaise with GT central functions Health & Safety, Environment, Commercial and Quality, review and implement improvement plans relative to KPI information.
  • Produce reports and board papers as required.
  • Provide design input at the outline, optioneering and detailed design stage of the project.
  • Perform structural design and analysis calculations using governing codes and standards, engineering formulas, skills, GT Fabs standard designs and experience.
  • Review Structural plans, designs, layouts and loading criteria.
  • Consult with the Project Management team as to the ‘constructability’ of the steelwork structures.
  • Support the ongoing development of the GT Fabs business by reviewing new technologies, new ways of working and software packages.
  • Occasional site visits for field measurements and client meetings.
  • Use Tekla and AutoCAD to develop layout, drawings, and designs that meet expectations and specifications.
  • Review and interpret structural plans from the contractor/client.
  • Review GT Fabs designs against client specifications, Eurocodes and British Standards.
  • Apply 2D and 3D CAD skills in the creation, conveying or extraction of information related to the project work.
  • Provide technical clarification to proposals, engineers, workshop and site personnel.
About you:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, experience with knowledge in civil and/or structural engineering, obtainable usually through a combination of experience and continuing education;
  • Working knowledge of Auto Cad or other drafting software.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Suite
  • Knowledge in basic drafting standards and principles
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload and demonstrate good time management to comply with deadlines.
  • The ability to pay close attention to detail, precision, and accuracy.
  • Able to work in a busy environment under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills (email/phone/face to face)
  • Possess a “can do” attitude and provide to support to other members of the team as required.
