Job description

This is an opportunity to use your communication, relationship-building and support skills to help people who are facing sight loss find the support, information and confidence they need to move forward.

A diagnosis that affects someone’s sight can bring uncertainty and a huge number of questions.

As an Eye Care Liaison Officer (ECLO), you’ll be there at a crucial time, providing practical information, emotional support and guidance to people with sight loss, their families and carers.

Working as part of RNIB’s Eye Care Support Services, you’ll help people understand the support available to them, identify their individual needs and make informed choices that enable them to maintain their independence.

You’ll support people face to face within hospital and community settings, as well as by telephone and digital channels.

About the role

This is a varied, people-focused role where you’ll provide person-centred advice and support to people of all ages affected by sight loss.

You’ll help individuals navigate the sight loss pathway, signpost and refer them to appropriate services, and provide guidance on areas such as certification and registration, falls prevention and the wider support available to them.

Where needed, you’ll also advocate on behalf of patients to help them access the right services.

Partnership working will be an important part of your role. You’ll build strong relationships with NHS eye care teams, statutory services, third-sector organisations and community partners, developing effective referral routes and helping ensure people receive joined-up support.

You’ll also contribute to service evaluation and improvement, attend relevant clinical and professional forums and help raise awareness of the ECLO service.

About you

You’ll have experience of providing information, advice or person-centred support, ideally within a health, social care or community environment, and an understanding of how these services work together.

An excellent communicator, you’ll be comfortable supporting people who may be dealing with difficult or life-changing circumstances, while remaining empathetic, impartial and non-judgemental.

You’ll also be confident building relationships with professionals and influencing others to achieve positive outcomes for the people you support.

You’ll be organised, adaptable and able to manage your own workload, with good IT skills and an understanding of the importance of accurate record keeping, GDPR and information governance.

The role may involve working across different locations and occasional travel for meetings or training.

You’ll also undertake the RNIB and City University Eye Clinic Support Studies qualification. The course is provided by RNIB and includes one week of study in Birmingham, alongside additional study and an exam.
