Job summary

Nottingham Trent International College, part of Kaplan International Pathways, seeks an External Examiner for Social Sciences modules within the Foundation Certificate and Pre-Master's programmes starting January 2027.

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of UK academic standards, HE teaching experience, and fluency in English, with the ability to assess and provide input on assessment tasks and examination papers across modules.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of UK sector reference points for maintenance of academic standards and assurance of quality.
• Evidence of teaching and learning in higher education.
• Academic and/or professional qualifications relevant to the subject area.
• Competence in designing and operating assessment tasks appropriate to Social Sciences.
• Sufficient standing and breadth of experience to command respect among peers.
• Fluency in English.
• Experience enhancing student learning experiences.

Responsibilities

• Participate in and endorse Assessment Board outcomes, in person or in writing if absent.
• Ensure Board recommendations align with programme aims and higher education best practice.
• Review grade ranges and sample student work across the spectrum.
• Assess and comment on draft examination papers and marking schemes.
• Provide feedback on good practice and innovations benefiting learning outcomes.
• Submit an annual report for each programme or module examined.

External Examiner for Social Sciences modules forming part of the Foundation Certificate and Pre-Master's programmes for Business, Law and Social Sciences at Nottingham Trent International College

Nottingham Trent International College, part of Kaplan International Pathways, is seeking an External Examiner for Social Sciences modules that form part of the Foundation Certificate and Pre-Master's for Business, Law and Social Sciences for its Foundation Certificate (RQF 3 or SCQF 7) and Pre-Master's programmes from January 2027.

Modules on the programme include: FC305 Contemporary Global Issues, FC313 People, Culture and Society, FC310 Logic and Critical Thinking, PM604 Philosophy, History and Culture, PM601E UK Society and Culture (Advanced)PM600 Research Project, PM606 Advanced Social Science

Duties will involve:

• Participating inand endorsing the outcomes of Assessment Boards through agreement at the meeting, or separately in writingif you are unable to attend
• Ensuring that the recommendations of the Board are consistent with the aims and curriculum of the programme and with good HE practice
• Reviewing the range of grades awarded and reviewing a sample of student work from across this range
• Assessing and commenting on draft examination papers, other assessments and marking schemes
• Providing feedbackon aspects ofgood practice and innovation that have a positive impact on the student learning experience
• Submitting an annual report for each programme or stand-alone module(s) examined

Candidates who wish to apply should be able to demonstrate evidence of the following:

• Knowledge and understanding of UK sector agreed reference points for maintenance of academic standards and assurance and enhancement of quality
• Competence and experience in the field of teaching and learning in HE
• Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications
• Competence and experience relating to designing and operating a variety of assessment tasks appropriate to the subject and operating assessment procedures
• Sufficient standing, credibility and breadth of experience within the discipline to be able to command the respect of academic peers and, where appropriate, professional peers
• Fluency in English
• Competence and experience relating to the enhancement of the student learning experience.

Please note: We recruit only international students who typically have English as a second language, so Examiners with experience of the needs of international students would be particularly welcome.

We may also be able to consider applications from candidates who do not have previous experience as External Examiners but possess desirable specialist subject knowledge necessary to work and gain experience as an External Examiner.
