About the role

First Bus is seeking a dynamic and politically astute External Affairs Manager to represent our company at the Scottish level. This role involves shaping and communicating policies, managing stakeholder relationships, and forging strategic partnerships to advance our business objectives and public transport advocacy.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and experience in politics and policy within the transport sector. Flexibility to prioritize tasks in a rapidly changing political landscape and strong collaboration skills are essential. The role requires regular travel across the UK, including overnight stays.

The External Affairs Manager will work across the Scottish and UK-wide businesses to deliver outcomes benefiting our customers, clients, and communities. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing relationships with Scottish political stakeholders
  • Building on existing relationships with local political stakeholders in Glasgow and Aberdeen
  • Influencing strategies with the business community to highlight the economic value of buses
  • Collaborating with a UK-wide team and adapting to changing political environments

The role also involves strengthening relationships with lobby groups and seeking new alliances to communicate our position effectively.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement public affairs strategies to influence policy at the national level
  • Identify and manage political risks
  • Establish reporting and governance processes
  • Build relationships with government officials, industry regulators, and stakeholders
  • Monitor legislative developments and advise on impacts
  • Represent the company at industry events and conferences
  • Coordinate with marketing and communications teams for messaging
  • Manage partnerships with government and transport organizations
  • Prepare briefings and submissions for government inquiries
  • Support cross-functional teams and build local team capabilities

  • Proven track record in public affairs or government relations, preferably in transport or public sector
  • Strong understanding of UK political environment and legislative processes
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience in developing partnerships and strategic alliances
