Costain is seeking a Senior Hydraulic Engineer to join our Engineering & Design Services team, focusing on providing specialist hydraulic support for UK water projects. The role is hybrid, with options to work from Manchester or London and occasional site visits.

You will lead hydraulic modelling, thermofluids analysis, and CFD initiatives, collaborating across disciplines to deliver efficient, safe, and compliant water infrastructure solutions.

Qualifications

  • Experience in hydraulics, surge analysis and design for water and wastewater systems.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to problem solving and to communicate with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience with thermofluids, network flows and hydraulic modelling.
  • Proficiency with HADES for steady state hydraulics.
  • Experience with CFD and physical modelling and related disciplines.
  • Proficient with MS Office tools.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hydraulic support on water projects including thermofluids, network flows and modelling.
  • Independently produce engineering deliverables: calculations, drawings, specs, reports with constructability focus.
  • Support design, assessment, optimization and analysis for water/wastewater processes.
  • Model and analyse outputs, delivering effective design solutions for short to long term impacts.
  • Interfacing with other disciplines and construction operations.
  • Deliver to budget and account for changes; contribute value engineering.
  • Communicate confidently with clients and stakeholders.

As we continue to increase our presence across the water sector, partnering with UK water companies to deliver their strategic capital delivery programmes for their AMP8 investment cycles, we have some exciting opportunities in our future pipeline for a Senior Hydraulic Engineer to join our growing Engineering & Design Services team supporting our Frameworks.


This will be a hybrid role working within our water sector team, providing specialist hydraulic support on our water projects including thermofluids, network flows and hydraulic modelling.


Our design office is in Manchester, but if you prefer and depending on your location, you can work from our London office, typical office attendance up to 3 days with the option for remote working. Occasional visits to other offices and site are expected.


Responsibilities


  • Working within our water sector team, providing specialist hydraulic support on our water projects including thermofluids, network flows and hydraulic modelling.

  • Independently produce and manage production of engineering deliverables such as calculations, drawings, specifications and reports for civils infrastructure with a strong focus on constructability.

  • Support the designs, assessment, optimisation and analysis for water and wastewater processes, including analysis techniques to be used within computational fluid dynamics analysis for water/wastewater processes.

  • Responsible for modelling and analysis outputs, providing effective design solutions looking at short, medium and longer-term impacts.

  • Interfacing closely with other disciplines and construction operations.

  • Delivering to budget and ensuring changes are compensated for.

  • Challenging and delivering value engineering solutions.

  • Communicating confidently and authoritatively with clients.


Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essentials


  • Experience in hydraulics, surge analysis and design for water and wastewater transmission, treatment and collection/distribution systems from feasibility through to detailed design, construction and commissioning support.

  • Be assertive, collaborative and curious, paying attention to relevant detail.

  • Be able to apply critical thinking to problem solving.

  • Experience in thermofluids, network flows and hydraulic modelling.

  • Experience with using HADES for steady state hydraulics.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (in Windows 10/11, particularly Excel & Word).

  • Some understanding of CFD, physical modelling and other relevant technical disciplines such as Civil and MEICA.

  • Proven communication skills including delivering presentations to both internal and external senior business leaders and clients.

  • Hold a full UK driving license.

  • Flexible and innovative outlook/approach.

  • Safety focused, be able to assess and articulate risks so ensuring safety by design.

  • Have UK project experience with a working knowledge of current UK regulations and design codes for H&S, environmental and engineering aspects.

  • Mobility to work on various projects throughout the UK

  • Have site or construction experience

  • Experience from multiple sectors / industries

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have line management / mentoring experience


Qualifications

Essential


  • A degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering subject.

  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional chartered institute.

  • CSCS card holder.

  • Right to work in the UK.

  • Additional technically focused qualifications / training
