Job summary

A leading specialty materials provider in the UK seeks an Experimental Scientist to join their R&D team. This role involves conducting research on methyl methacrylate (MMA) manufacturing technology, preparing and testing catalysts, and ensuring adherence to safety standards. The ideal candidate will have a Level 5 qualification in Chemistry, laboratory experience is preferred but not required. This position promotes a collaborative and safe working environment.

The Role

An opportunity to join our R&D team carrying out research on various projects related to the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer.

As an Experimental Scientist, you will use your skills in chemistry to support R&D on MMA manufacturing technology. You will work with scientists within the R&D group to prepare and characterise heterogenous catalyst formulations as well as perform catalyst testing in lab scale fixed bed reactors. You will also be involved in executing well defined experimental programmes relating to MMA chemistry.

Day to Day Activities

  • Adhere to safety standards and actively contribute towards safety practice and culture within the laboratory (risk assessments, COSHH assessments, etc.).
  • Prepare, characterise and test heterogeneous catalyst formulations (physical characterisation, XRF, N2 porosimetry, etc.) as well as reaction process streams (GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC).
  • Conduct well defined research packages relating to general organic and inorganic chemistry.
  • Work with a Senior Scientists within the group to plan and execute experimental programmes.

About You

  • Qualified to at least Level 5 (HND) in Chemistry or similar, BSc preferred.
  • 1-3 years' experience of working in the chemical industry is highly desirable although not required.
  • Proven ability to work safely and effectively, both individually and co-operatively with other members of the team.
  • Competent with use of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Experience with laboratory analytical equipment XRF, N2 porosimetry, GC, HPLC.
