Job description

Experienced SEN Tutor | South London & Surrounding Areas

Remedy Tutoring is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated SEN Tutor to support children and young people across South London and the surrounding areas.

We are seeking a patient, adaptable and knowledgeable tutor with proven experience supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The ideal candidate will be confident delivering personalised tuition to students with a range of additional needs, adapting their teaching methods to suit individual abilities, communication styles and learning preferences.

Our students may have gaps in their education, be working below their expected academic level or experience difficulties accessing mainstream education. Some may require highly structured lessons, additional processing time, visual resources or a flexible approach to engagement.

We are looking for tutors who understand that every student learns differently and are committed to creating a positive, supportive environment where students can build confidence, develop essential skills and make meaningful progress.

The Role
  • Deliver personalised one-to-one tuition tailored to each student's individual needs, abilities and learning targets.
  • Support students across core subjects, including English, Maths and Science, depending on your qualifications and subject specialisms.
  • Work with students with a range of SEN, which may include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), learning difficulties and communication needs.
  • Adapt lessons to support students who are working below age-related expectations or have significant gaps in their learning.
  • Use appropriate teaching strategies, visual resources, structured routines and differentiated materials to support understanding and engagement.
  • Break learning into manageable steps, allowing time for repetition, processing and consolidation where needed.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students who may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education.
  • Support students who may struggle with attention, anxiety, transitions, emotional regulation or engagement with learning.
  • Encourage confidence, independence, communication and the development of essential academic and functional skills.
  • Monitor progress and adapt teaching approaches to meet each student's changing needs.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers, schools and other professionals where appropriate.
  • Deliver tuition in a variety of settings, including students' homes, libraries and school environments, depending on the requirements of each placement.
Essential Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years' teaching or tutoring experience, ideally working with students with SEN.
  • Relevant teaching qualifications, such as PGCE or QTS, are desirable.
  • Proven experience supporting children and young people with additional learning needs.
  • A strong understanding of how SEN can affect learning, communication, behaviour and engagement.
  • Experience differentiating lessons and adapting teaching methods to suit individual students.
  • The ability to support students working below their expected academic level and identify gaps in foundational skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A patient, empathetic and flexible approach, with the ability to remain calm and consistent when students find learning challenging.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to plan structured, engaging lessons.
  • Confidence working independently and adapting to different learning environments.
  • A full driving licence and access to reliable transport is desirable for roles requiring travel between tuition locations.
Availability & Working Arrangements

We welcome tutors with a range of availability, whether you are looking for regular weekly tuition or more flexible opportunities.

Tuition usually takes place Monday to Friday, with specific days and times depending on the student's needs and the agreed timetable.

Tutors must be comfortable delivering tuition in students' homes, libraries or school settings, depending on the individual placement. Some roles may involve supporting students who are currently unable to attend school, so flexibility and an understanding of alternative learning environments are important.

We aim to match tutors with opportunities that suit their qualifications, experience, subject specialisms, availability and preferred working locations.
