Job summary

Main duties of the job

To act as a pivotal role in supporting our dedicated team of GPs by providing comprehensive care to our patients. Your contributions will encompass a wide spectrum of responsibilities, spanning from administering essential treatments and fostering preventative healthcare measures to conducting thorough screenings and engaging in informative patient education. Your commitment will act as the foundation of our patient-centered approach, ensuring that our community receives the highest standard of care and attention.

St Stephen's is a progressive 13,500 patient, GMS teaching and training practice situated in the heart of Bow, right on the Roman Road Market. We are easily accessible by public transport and have an underground carpark for those who wish to drive.

Our large practice collaborates with other local practices in a Network to deliver care in Tower Hamlets.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will depend on factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  1. Undertake new patient health checks
  2. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
  3. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
  4. Facilitate routine home BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  5. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks in support of the nursing team
  6. Support the practice nurse with the management of long-term condition patients
  7. Support minor surgery and Anti-coag clinics
  8. Act as a chaperone, as required
  9. Administer flu, pneumo, shingles and B12 injections
  10. Conduct monthly home visits for disabled and housebound patients
  11. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for transportation by 16:30 daily
  12. Organise annual equipment calibration
  13. Ensure all clinical rooms are stocked and prepared for each session
  14. Maintain fridge cleanliness and monitor temperatures daily
  15. Ensure clinical waste and sharps bins are managed according to IPC policy
  16. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

In addition, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:

  1. Participate in practice audits as directed
  2. Engage in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  3. Support shared learning within the organization, attending MDT, clinical, and nursing meetings
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years' experience working in a Primary Care setting
  • Healthcare qualifications (Level 3 or 4) or working towards equivalent
  • Experience using EMIS clinical system
  • Completion of the HCA Care Certificate
  • Qualified in Phlebotomy
  • Experience caring for LTC patients
Experience
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary professionals
  • Working within a healthcare environment, especially primary care
Knowledge and Skills
  • Performing new patient assessments including height, weight, BP, pulse
  • Accurately recording clinical notes
  • Chaperone procedures
  • Proficiency with EMIS system
  • Wound care, suture and staple removal
  • Administering cervical screening (CSMC)
Long Term Conditions
  • Experience with EMIS templates for recording and managing LTC results and actions
