Job summary

Sherburn Group Practice is seeking a Health Care Assistant to join our nursing team in a busy GP surgery near Sherburn in Elmet. The role is varied, requires calmness under pressure, and entails supporting GPs and practice nurses to deliver patient care within set protocols.

Experience in GP surgery or hospital settings is preferred. The post is 27 hours per week, covering Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with potential for ongoing development and training.

Job summary

The role of the Health Care Assistant is extremely varied and requires quick thinking, the ability to put patients quickly at ease, working within set appointment times and working to set protocols. It is important that the post holder is able to remain calm under pressure, is efficient, organised and can be considered by patients and colleagues as friendly, caring and approachable. For this post, we are ideally looking to appoint someone who already has experience of working as a HCA in a GP surgery and/or Hospital setting. Hours and days of work: 27hrs per week. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Main duties of the job

Depending upon the existing skills and experience of the most suitable candidate, the role will include aspects of the following:

  • Urinalysis, Phlebotomy and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory
  • Undertaking health checks for patients with long term conditions and to gather data: e.g. NHS Health Checks, QoF data capturing.
  • Measuring and recording following physiological measurements in routine presentations: - blood pressure - pulse rate and rhythm - height and weight - body mass index - venepuncture - nebulisation therapy - ECG - peak flow reading - spirometry (training will be given) - chaperoning - basic wound care - blood sugar readings - assisting Minor Surgery/IUCDs

Applicants will work as part of our nursing team (Nurse Manager, ACP, three qualified nurses delivering care to long-term condition patients, two treatment room nurses, one HCA and one phlebotomist and a Care Co-Ordinator to support the team). Job Title: Experienced Health Care Assistant

Purpose: To assist the GPs and practice nurse team in the service and delivery of the care management of the practice population

Responsible to: Nurse Manager, GP Partners

Job summary

The post holder works under indirect supervision of the GPS and undertakes tasks and duties delegated by GPs and qualified nursing staff. HCAs work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures.

Key responsibilities
Communication
  • Communicate effectively with other team members
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication

  • Take responsibility for own developmental learning and performance, including participating in supervision
  • Take responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal development

  • Recognise and understand the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in the primary health care team
  • Be aware of the legal issues pertinent to the role of a basic HCA
Health, safety and security
  • Use the personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines

  • Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards reporting of any potential risks identified, including:
  1. hand washing
  2. universal hygiene procedures
  3. collection and handling of laboratory specimens
  4. segregation and disposal of waste materials
  5. decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
  6. reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
  7. dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
  8. Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures
  • Understand and apply the principles of the cold chain
  • Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs within area of responsibility
  • Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate
  • Be aware of statutory child health procedures and statutory local guidance and referral criteria
  • Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, maintaining documentation, monitoring and maintaining of equipment and furniture within your area of responsibility
  • Use the computer safely
  • Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the working environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

  • Be aware of and, if appropriate, assist in current clinical audit
