Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, physically fit, and possess knowledge of garden machinery, with a formal qualification preferred.
Experienced Gardener Vacancy – Buckinghamshire
An exciting opportunity has become available for a qualified Experienced Gardener on a stunning private estate located near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
Set within 35 acres of tranquil Buckinghamshire countryside, this exceptional hilltop estate offers a peaceful and picturesque setting surrounded by natural beauty. The grounds are both expansive and varied, encompassing formal gardens, meadows, pastures, five acres of woodland, and an area designated as being of scientific interest. The landscape reflects the character of the rolling countryside, offering sweeping scenic views throughout the property. At the heart of the estate lies the main house, surrounded by an eclectic one and a half acres of formal gardens maintained to a high horticultural standard and consists of various flower and shrub borders, heather border, extensive collection of Japanese maples, and a signature rose walk designed and laid out by David Austin.
The front terrace of the house is adorned with potted plants and a variety of climbers such as clematis and roses, and it overlooks a beautifully positioned swimming pool. An alpine border graces the steep bank beside the swimming pool, transitioning into a more naturalistic landscape of non-manicured lawn and wildflower meadows that flow gently to the bottom of the valley, culminating in a stretch of mature woodland marking the edge of the property. The estate also features a tennis court and a fully equipped barn, housing an array of tools including work benches, strimmers, hedge cutters, chainsaws, and mowers—ideal for maintaining both the cultivated and wilder aspects of the grounds.
The Gardener will report directly to the property owners and will be responsible for the ongoing management, maintenance, and development of the grounds and gardens to a high horticultural standard. This opportunity would suit a self-motivated and proactive individual capable of working independently and will also be required to oversee and collaborate with another gardener. Adaptability is key, as the position requires working across a range of formal and informal garden areas.
The successful candidate will have proven experience in maintaining a similar-sized and style of garden and will ideally hold a Level 2 horticultural qualification (or higher) or demonstrate a willingness to work toward formal qualifications. A sound knowledge of garden machinery is essential, and a chainsaw licence is a requirement; however, training can be provided. Given the estate’s hillside setting and the physical nature of the role, the successful applicant must be physically fit, active, and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for horticulture to contribute meaningfully to a beautifully maintained and diverse garden.
References and DBS will be requested at offer stage. Due to the rural location of the property, a driving licence and own vehicle is required.
