A leading company seeks an Experienced Gardener to transform a beautiful 6.5-acre estate in North Connel, Scotland. The role involves hands-on care, restoration of gardens, and requires horticultural knowledge, creative vision, and excellent communication skills. This full-time position offers the opportunity to work independently while shaping a thriving, natural garden.
A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for a skilled and enthusiastic Experienced Gardener – Scotland to take on the care and ongoing transformation of a beautiful 6.5-acre private estate in North Connel. This remarkable property is surrounded by Lochside views, mature woodlands, a gently sloping hillside and a vibrant wildflower flood meadow. With the house currently undergoing a major renovation, the owners are now turning their focus to the garden and are looking for someone who can help bring their vision for the landscape to life.
The successful candidate will work closely with the owners to help reimagine and restore the garden landscape in a way that complements the surrounding farmland and breathtaking scenery. This is a practical, hands-on role that would suit someone with a creative eye, solid horticultural knowledge, and a genuine love of working with nature. It’s a rare opportunity to make your mark on a remarkable landscape as it evolves and grows.
The Experienced Gardener – Scotland will be responsible for all aspects of the garden’s care from restoring lawns and borders to replanting hedges and shaping ornamental areas. The vegetable garden and greenhouse are ready to be brought back to life, offering a great opportunity to shape a productive space from the ground up. The garden includes a well-established collection of azaleas and rhododendrons, which will need thoughtful maintenance to keep them healthy and looking their best. You’ll also be tackling some ongoing challenges, including invasive species like Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and bramble, as well as dealing with aggressive regrowth and helping to bring neglected areas back under control.
The candidate must be confident using a range of garden machinery and happy working in a physically demanding role, whilst managing their own workload in all seasons. While much of the work will be independent, excellent communication skills are essential to effectively liaise with contractors, and neighbouring farmers. A minimum of three years’ relevant experience is required, along with broad horticultural knowledge and a passion for developing and maintaining a thriving, naturalistic garden. Just as important is the ability to communicate well and build a positive working relationship with the owners, especially as the project continues to take shape.
This is a full-time, permanent position that requires a full driving licence and your own vehicle. The role is physically demanding, so a good level of fitness is important. Previous experience operating and maintaining garden machinery is essential. Ideally, candidates will have at least three years’ experience working in a similar environment.
