Job description

Julian House is a charity dedicated to making a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in society. We run several projects and every year we help thousands of people out of homelessness, into employment, away from domestic abuse, and more.

We’re currently looking for passionate and committed volunteers to join us in making a real difference.

Job Role: Outreach Volunteer

Location: Exeter

Hours: Flexible, this can range from a couple of hours a month to a couple of hours per week

Outreach sessions typically run seven days a week, starting at 6:00 AM and finishing around 9:00 AM.

The Role

Are you passionate about making a real difference in your community? As an Outreach Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in supporting some of the most vulnerable individuals in Exeter—those experiencing street homelessness.

Working alongside our dedicated Rough Sleeper Prevention Workers, you’ll head out on early morning or evening routes through the city, helping to identify and engage with people sleeping rough. You’ll be paired with a member of staff and follow a planned route, offering a friendly face, a listening ear, and practical support.

This is a hands-on role that involves walking several miles in all weather conditions—but your presence can be the first step in someone’s journey off the streets. Your support helps ensure our outreach runs smoothly and that no one is left behind.

If you're compassionate, reliable, and ready to make a meaningful impact, we’d love to hear from you!

Please note: To volunteer in our outreach team, you must be 18 years or older and will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS check as part of the onboarding process.

What’s In It For You

  • Make a Real Difference: Your time and care will have a direct impact on the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Gain Valuable Experience: Develop your skills in communication, teamwork, and frontline support – great for anyone interested in careers in social care, housing, or community work.
  • Be Part of a Passionate Team: Work alongside experienced staff who are committed to tackling homelessness and supporting vulnerable individuals.

What’s Expected Of You

  • Bring Enthusiasm: A positive attitude and a willingness to get involved go a long way in making a difference.
  • Follow Guidelines: Adhere to our policies and procedures to help ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
  • Champion Our Mission: Support Julian House’s goal of helping vulnerable and at-risk individuals rebuild their lives.
