Job description

BrisDoc is an award winning, clinician-led, employee-owned social enterprise delivering NHS urgent and primary care across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. We provide compassionate, high-quality care to over one million patients, and we’re looking for an exceptional Executive Medical Director to join our Board.

This is a pivotal Executive Director role, combining statutory clinical accountability with collaborative system leadership in an ambitious organisation with real pace and variety.

The opportunity

As Executive Medical Director, you’ll be BrisDoc’s senior clinical leader and the Board’s accountable executive for patient safety, quality of care, clinical governance and professional clinical standards.

You’ll work closely with the Chief Executive, Executive colleagues and Non-Executive Directors to ensure BrisDoc is clinically well-led, safe and resilient. You’ll provide credible assurance to the Board, supported by robust data, insight and clear narrative. You’ll also represent BrisDoc as a confident senior clinical voice across system partnerships.

Our services are diverse and fast-moving, with a genuine line of sight between governance decisions and what happens for patients and clinicians every day. Services include:

  • Severnside Integrated Urgent Care
  • In-hours primary care services
  • Specialist services including Homeless Health
What you’ll lead

You’ll provide organisation-wide clinical leadership, including:

  • Board-level accountability for patient safety, quality, clinical governance and professional standards
  • Clear, credible assurance to the Board, using data and narrative
  • Executive oversight of Patient Safety Incident Investigations (PSIIs), coroner’s cases, significant complaints and clinical claims, including escalation and management of clinical risk
  • Strong systems for clinical learning, quality assurance and continuous improvement
  • Executive responsibility (with the Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals and Governance) for clinical aspects of regulatory compliance and inspection readiness, including Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements
  • Professional governance, including managing concerns relating to clinical staff and upholding standards and conduct
  • Acting as Caldicott Guardian (information governance accountability)
  • Clinical leadership across strategy, workforce, service development and digital transformation
  • System leadership, representing BrisDoc across BNSSG and the wider South West and beyond
  • A commitment to staying close to care through a clinical footprint within BrisDoc services (details to be agreed)
Who we’re looking for

We’re seeking a senior clinical leader with the credibility, judgement and executive maturity to operate effectively at Board level in a complex healthcare environment.

You will have:
  • Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCGP or equivalent senior medical qualification enabling clinical participation within BrisDoc services
  • Significant senior clinical leadership experience at Director level (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrable leadership of clinical governance, patient safety and regulatory engagement
  • Experience providing assurance and constructive challenge at Board/Executive level
  • Strong understanding of NHS statutory and regulatory frameworks, including CQC

You will demonstrate:

  • Inclusive, collaborative executive leadership
  • Sound judgement and the ability to hold clinical risk
  • Emotional intelligence and influence with diverse stakeholders
  • Integrity, resilience and professionalism
  • Commitment to openness, learning and psychological safety

We’re committed to equity, diversity and inclusion at all leadership levels. We particularly welcome applications from women and other groups currently under-represented within our senior leadership team.

What we can offer
  • Hours: 30–37.5 hours per week (to be agreed)
  • Salary: £140,000–£150,000 (FTE) per annum (dependent on experience)
  • Pension: NHS Pension
  • Flexibility: We recognise senior clinicians may hold portfolio roles and we’re open to conversations about flexible working that supports both organisational and individual sustainability.
  • The chance to shape clinical strategy and governance at system level in an employee-owned organisation where every colleague is a co-owner with a genuine stake in our success.
