About The FCA

The FCA regulates the conduct of 45,000 firms in the UK to ensure our financial markets are honest, fair and competitive. Follow this link to find out more About the FCA.

The Team

The Infrastructure & Exchanges Directorate is responsible for large parts of the regulatory framework for wholesale financial markets and for the supervision of 5 portfolios of firms that each perform crucial functions in the financial markets. The role provides a great seat from which to learn about a significant part of the FCA’s work and also how the wider FCA works, while being part of a friendly, welcoming, empowered and team-spirited Directorate.

What will you be doing?

You will help ensure that the Director’s office operates efficiently and effectively, and that the Director receives appropriate briefings and other input, such as for key meetings and external engagements.

Specifically, The Role Will Involve The Following

  • Coordinating production of a range of outputs or products on the Director’s behalf, e.g., presentation materials and the weekly note submission
  • Acting as the operational contact point between the Director and the rest of the Directorate, to ensure we operate in an efficient and joined up way. Also providing a link between the Infrastructure & Exchange directorate and other areas of the FCA working on wholesale capital markets, as well as other parts of the FCA, to make sure our works fits in with the FCA’s overall strategic aims
  • Ensuring the Director’s office runs efficiently, including providing support and direction to the Director’s PA and delegating administrative operational tasks appropriately to the PA to maximise contributions to effectiveness
  • Horizon scanning for key issues that might need escalation to the Director and identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency and smooth running of the Directorate and to embed the FCA values
  • Assisting the senior leadership team by managing their collective agenda, supporting decision making and ensuring actions are carried out. Also helping to organise informative and fun directorate townhalls
  • Act as operational contact point for the Directorate, for example co-ordinating completion of periodic requirements to report progress vs business plan commitments, input to business planning, risk and control assessments or internal audit actions

What will you get from the role?

  • A breadth of skills and experience that will support your personal development and will help you to develop and advance your career at the FCA
  • Insight into a broad range of policy issues, domestically and internationally
  • Insight into the management and strategic outlook of the FCA
  • Autonomy and a chance to shape the role to make it "your own"
  • An opportunity to build a strong network with senior management, as well as a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Which skills are required?

We are a Disability Confident Employer; therefore, disabled people or individuals with long-term conditions who best meet the minimum criteria for a role will go through to the next stage of the recruitment process. (To learn more about the Disability Confident Scheme Click Here)

Minimum

  • Proven experience of managing a busy workload, prioritising effectively and delivering under pressure, including juggling multiple issues
  • Experience of managing work autonomously and delivering outputs efficiently
  • Strong written communication skills with good attention to detail

Essential

  • An ability to analyse and rapidly assimilate new information and understand complex issues to provide practical and constructive recommendations or escalate issues as appropriate
  • Good verbal communication skills and the ability to adapt your approach to varied audiences
  • Discretion, confidence and composure when dealing with sensitive and complex situations
  • Tenacity to question and challenge all levels of the FCA (where appropriate) in a constructive and positive manner
  • A team player with the ability to gain people’s trust and influence effectively
  • Flexibility and commitment to the role, including the ability to work well under pressure and to short deadlines
  • Close attention to detail
  • Ideally, some knowledge of financial markets and policy or supervision of firms in wholesale markets - but this is not essential
