Job summary

The Sun is seeking an experienced Assistant Night Editor to join the backbench within the integrated newsroom in London. You will help shape the nightly edition, oversee copy and design, and act as a link between editorial desks and print execution, ensuring high-impact storytelling across print and digital.

You will work the seven-day rota, evenings and weekends, collaborating with desks, design and advertising teams, while upholding Contempt and IPSO standards and Editors’ Code of Practice.

Qualifications

• Senior production experience in a fast-paced national or major regional press.
• Experience with digital publishing and video production.
• Strong headline writing and page design skills.
• Strong knowledge of media law and IPSO Editors' Code.
• Ability to make high-stakes editing decisions quickly in a seven-day operation.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the news and picture desks, sub-editors and art desk to create visually striking pages, write snappy, agenda-setting headlines, and maintain flawless copy standards under tight deadlines.
• Suggest story treatments, design tricks and splash ideas to the Night Editor.
• Revise and send pages for publication, meticulously checking the tone, layout and headlines on each story, while always adhering to copyflow timings to keep print production on track.
• Work closely with the advertising team to strategically position ad placements, ensuring compliance with placement guidelines.
• Liaise with the Heads of News and Pictures to maximise the impact of stories online and in video.
• Serve as a line of defence for media law and regulatory compliance, ensuring all headlines and copy strictly adheres to Contempt and Libel law, IPSO standards and the Editors’ Code of Practice.
