Job summary

Granite Recruitment Ltd is seeking an experienced Estimator to join its civil engineering and infrastructure tendering team. You will develop robust cost estimates, analyse drawings and contracts, and prepare competitive tenders in collaboration with engineers, project managers, and suppliers.

The role requires a strong background in quantity surveying, civil projects, and proficiency with estimating tools and Excel.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as an Estimator in civil/infra sectors.
  • Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, QS, or related field.
  • Strong ability to interpret drawings, specs and contracts.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in estimating software and MS Excel.
  • Able to manage multiple tenders under deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil and infrastructure projects, including materials, labour and plant.
  • Analyse drawings, specs and contracts to define scope and requirements.
  • Develop accurate quantity take-offs, rates and pricing structures.
  • Produce cost reports and support budgeting throughout tender stage.
  • Identify risks and opportunities; support price recommendations and tender submissions.
  • Collaborate with project teams and suppliers to gather information and inputs.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Estimator to join a growing commercial team within the civil engineering and infrastructure sector.

As an Estimator, you will play a key role in the tendering process, working closely with engineering, commercial, and operational teams to develop robust cost estimates for a variety of civil engineering and infrastructure projects. You will analyse project documentation, assess risks, liaise with suppliers and subcontractors, and contribute to securing new business opportunities that align with organisational objectives.

Key Responsibilities
Tendering & Cost Estimation
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil engineering and infrastructure projects, including materials, labour, plant, and associated resources.
  • Analyse drawings, specifications, and contract documentation to determine project scope and requirements.
  • Develop accurate quantity take-offs, rates, and pricing structures.
  • Produce detailed cost reports and support budgeting processes throughout the tender stage.
  • Identify project risks, opportunities, and value engineering solutions to enhance project viability.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of competitive tenders and proposals.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, planners, and commercial teams to gather technical and operational input.
  • Review and analyse tender documents, contracts, drawings, and specifications.
  • Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, and stakeholders to obtain competitive quotations and technical information.
  • Participate in tender review meetings and provide clear justification for pricing assumptions and recommendations.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships across project teams and external partners.
Commercial & Technical Responsibilities
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market trends, material prices, labour costs, and industry developments.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, industry standards, and relevant legislation.
  • Support the development of tender submissions, including methodologies, programmes, and pricing breakdowns.
  • Maintain accurate records of estimates, quotations, tender documents, and project information.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the estimating function.
Skills & Experience
Essential
  • Proven experience as an Estimator within the civil engineering, construction, utilities, infrastructure, or related sectors.
  • Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering and infrastructure project components, including earthworks, drainage, concrete works, utilities, and structural elements.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and contract documentation.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tenders and work effectively under deadlines.
Desirable
  • Experience working on large-scale infrastructure or construction projects.
  • Knowledge of NEC-3 or NEC-4 and other standard forms of contract.
  • Understanding of value engineering and risk management principles.
