Job summary

Sheet Piling (UK) Limited is seeking an experienced Estimator for its head office in Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley. The role covers enquiries from receipt to submission, pricing all elements from plant to preliminaries, and coordinating with in-house design and construction teams.

You will price tenders for sheet piling, ground engineering and temporary works, with evidence of NEC/JCT contract awareness and strong Excel numeracy.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as an Estimator with a specialist contractor in sheet piling, ground engineering, temporary works.
• Confidence reading engineering drawings, specifications and ground investigation data
• Working knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts, and how contract terms affect price and risk
• Strong numeracy and good Excel skills
• You live within a comfortable daily commute of Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley

Responsibilities

• Review incoming enquiries, including drawings, specifications, site investigation reports and contract documents
• Build priced tenders from first principles: plant, labour, materials, transport, preliminaries, etc.
• Agree the installation method with our in-house design team, and price accordingly
• Work with Construction and Plant teams so outputs reflect site realities
• Prepare clear, well qualified submissions with sensible assumptions, exclusions and value engineering options
• Follow up submitted tenders with main contractors and support negotiations through to award
• Take part in tender review meetings and handover the job to the delivery team
• Visit sites and meet clients when a job calls for it

Price the work our own rigs will build

Most estimators price work for someone else to deliver. At Sheet Piling (UK) Limited, the rigs, the steel and the design team are all ours. Your price is built on plant we own, stock we hold and people you can walk across the office and talk to.

We have been a specialist steel piling contractor for over thirty years. We run our own fleet, including Giken silent piling presses, telescopic leader rigs and the UK's only long-reach telescopic leader rigs, and we carry over 20,000 tonnes of new and used sheet pile stock. Our enquiries come from highways, water, rail, flood defence, marine and residential development, and our project list includes HS2, the Silvertown Tunnel, the M23 Junction 10 improvement and the Middlewich Eastern Bypass.

Our secured workload runs into 2027 and enquiry levels are strong. We are adding an experienced Estimator to our pre-construction team to help us price more of it, and win more of it.

This is not a seat in a large estimating department where you price one element of a package and never see it again. You will take enquiries from first receipt through to submission, see which ones we win, and hand them over to the people who build them.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to our Estimating Manager, you will:

• Review incoming enquiries, including drawings, specifications, site investigation reports and contract documents
• Build priced tenders from first principles: plant, labour, materials, transport, preliminaries, etc.
• Agree the installation method with our in-house design team, whether that is silent pressing, vibratory, impact driving, excavator mounted or long reach, and price it accordingly
• Work with our Construction and Plant teams so your outputs, durations and plant rates reflect what happens on site
• Prepare clear, well qualified submissions with sensible assumptions, exclusions and value engineering options
• Follow up submitted tenders with main contractors and support negotiations through to award
• Take part in tender review meetings and handover the job to the delivery team
• Visit sites and meet clients when a job calls for it

What you'll need

Essential

• Proven experience as an Estimator with a specialist contractor in sheet piling, ground engineering, temporary works
• Confidence reading engineering drawings, specifications and ground investigation data
• Working knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts, and how contract terms affect price and risk
• Strong numeracy and good Excel skills
• You live within a comfortable daily commute of Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley

Desirable

• Sheet piling or piling estimating experience
• A background in bored, CFA or mini piling, ground anchors, soil nailing, cofferdams or temporary works
• Degree, HNC or HND in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
• Experience of estimating software alongside spreadsheets

No sheet piling experience? That is fine. If you have priced specialist civils or ground engineering work, you already understand most of this job. We will teach you the rest: our methods, our plant and how we price them.

Location

This role is based at our head office in Clayton-le-Woods, two minutes from junction 29 of the M6. We are looking for someone local, whether that is Preston, Chorley, Leyland, Blackburn, Wigan, Manchester, Bolton, Liverpool or anywhere within an easy daily drive.
