Job summary

A leading construction firm based in Basildon is seeking an experienced Estimator to join their team. In this role, you will prepare detailed cost estimates for a range of construction projects, ensuring accurate and competitive tenders. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in estimating, ideally within a main contractor environment, with exposure to projects up to £20m and strong knowledge of construction methods. Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office is required. The company focuses on public sector projects including education and healthcare.

Job description

ESD are currently representing a well-established main contractor delivering projects ranging from £50k up to circa £20m. The business predominantly operates within the public sector, covering Education, Social Housing, Civic, Entertainment, Healthcare, Leisure, and Commercial sectors.

The team is made up of ex–Tier 1 contractor professionals and directors, offering a high-quality, professional service with a personal approach. They are known for streamlining construction processes through the adoption of Modern Methods of Construction wherever possible.

Role Overview

Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of secured and upcoming work, they are now looking to appoint an experienced Estimator to join the team. You will play a key role in pricing and securing projects, working closely with the pre-construction and commercial teams to deliver accurate and competitive tenders.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for a range of construction projects
• Review drawings, specifications, and tender documentation
• Take-offs and pricing of materials, labour, and subcontract packages
• Obtain and assess subcontractor and supplier quotations
• Identify risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving solutions
• Liaise with clients, consultants, and internal teams throughout the tender process
• Assist in the preparation and submission of tender returns and supporting documents
• Maintain strong relationships with supply chain partners
• Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes

Requirements

• Proven experience as an Estimator within a main contractor environment
• Experience working on projects across public sector and/or commercial sectors
• Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and pricing
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
• Excellent attention to detail and commercial awareness
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• Proficient in estimating software and Microsoft Office
• Experience working on projects up to £20m
• Exposure to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)
