Overview

Estates Mechanical Shift Engineer Band 5. This is a Full Time role with staff benefits which include 27 days annual leave (plus 8 bank holidays), NHS Pension scheme, in-house training programmes, and a range of discounts and cash back opportunities.

The role of Estates Shift Engineer is a rewarding and entrusted position within the Estates team at St James Hospital and integral to how the team supports patient care. The role operates a shift rota: 2 days (12hrs) followed by 2 nights (12hrs) then 4 days off. The salary advertised is the basic salary and does not include shift allowances.

The chosen candidate will be part of a dynamic team committed to patient care, assist with complex systems, carry out dynamic risk assessments, work autonomously when required, organise and rectify reactive works and carry out statutory planned maintenance to ensure maximum equipment availability and minimal downtime.

Main duties

The Estates Technician must come from a mechanical background and will maintain, fault find, repair and install on facilities, plant and equipment throughout the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Estate. They will act as the Trust representative in the absence of the Estates Officer or when requested by line management.

Key activities include maintenance on the full range of Estates Services equipment, calibration and fault finding on engineering plant and equipment (including steam raising plant, medical gas systems, building services controls, heating and ventilation control, refrigeration, nurse call systems, and related equipment).

Undertake condition surveys, evaluate inspection reports and maintenance repairs, improvements and capital works, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards. Plan major interruptions and co-ordinate the work of others; provide practical training and evaluate work.

Job responsibilities

Install, maintain, service and repair the full range of Estates Services equipment. Calibrate and fault-find on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment which may include steam raising plant, medical gas systems, nurse call systems, fire detection, building services controls, heating/ventilation controls and refrigeration plant. Undertake condition surveys and ensure compliance with safety standards. Plan and organise major interruptions and co-ordinate work of others. Deputise for Estates Officer as required and provide technical advice. Provide an emergency out-of-hours service, rotating shifts as negotiated.

Carry out own dynamic risk assessments and generic risk assessments as required. Supervise and organise Estates work in a Clinical environment. Work autonomously using the Works Management System to allocate PPM and reactive work requests. Liaise with area users to organise shutdowns of critical patient support systems. Communicate effectively with Wards and Departments regarding Estates issues. Ensure compliance with ISO9001:2000, HTMs, working practices and Permit to Work Systems. Interpret instructions, drawings and specifications and pass knowledge to others.

Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance and day-to-day duties for all plant, equipment and installations (boilers, water testing, electrical systems including fire alarms, batteries and UPS). Utilise the Works Management System for recording and auditing estate records. Carry out surveys for future maintenance and compile technical reports. Notify and respond to alarms and ensure safety during lifts, medical gas systems and other critical services.

Qualifications and experience

Qualifications Essential

  • Equivalent NVQ Level 3 Craft Certificate OR City & Guilds 232/236/205 OR Plumbing Advanced Certificate (596) OR Plumbing Craft Certificate (569)

Experience Essential

  • Experience on breakdowns and preventive maintenance of technical mechanical, steam raising and electrical plant in a hospital environment

Desirable

  • Experience in a acute Hospital Environment
  • BMS systems
