Job description

Please note, although this role is being advertised by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, it will transfer to OneLSC a Corporate Collaboration hosted by East Lancashire Hospitals Trust on 1.11.24. There are no plans to change the location of the role.


The Estates department at Furness General Hospital is a group of highly skilled electrical, mechanical, and plumbing engineers, creative building craftpersons, and dedicated support staff.


We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Estates Officer - Mechanical to join us.


You should be experienced, time served, and suitably qualified in mechanical engineering maintenance, fault finding, and repairs. Ideally, you will have trained to NVQ Level 4/HNC level or above.


You should also be proficient in small scale installation work on mechanical services, plant and equipment. Healthcare experience would be advantageous but not essential - as full training will be given.


Flexible working and the ability to participate in an on-call rota is required.


The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the mechanical infrastructure at FGH. This includes:

  1. Taking on the role of Mechanical AP, Ventilation AP, Water Safety AP, and being responsible for the mechanical permit to work system for the site.
  2. Managing internal and external labour ensuring their compliance with HTM and H&S regulations.
  3. Managing all mechanical aspects of property maintenance for trust properties and other organisation’s properties on behalf of the Trust.
  4. Supervising and carrying out line manager duties for trade staff.
  5. Participating in the training of junior staff and apprentices to ensure they receive work experience, upskilling, and competency-based task training.
  6. Ensuring materials, technical information, and access is available for trade staff and contractors to fulfil their duties.
  7. Assisting, and deputising for, the site Engineering Managers and Building Managers as required.
  8. Carrying out estates surveys, estates returns, managing minor project works, and assisting in the monitoring of energy usage.

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.


FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.


WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.


All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
