Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting for an Electrical Assistant (Band 3) in the Estates and Facilities Department at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. The role covers planned maintenance, reactive repairs and minor installations across Trust sites, with a 37.5-hour week, RRP and overtime/on-call opportunities.

The post includes a competitive NHS salary (£25,760–£27,476 per annum pro rata) plus employer pension contributions and generous leave.

Qualifications

  • Recognised electrical qualifications or equivalent training.
  • NVQ Level 2 or approved equivalent in Electrical/Engineering.
  • NC/HNC/HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Registration with UK Register of Electricians or equivalent bodies.
  • Driving licence and safety training such as NEBOSH/IOSH.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake planned preventive maintenance and minor repairs on electrical installations.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and diagnose faults for prompt repairs.
  • Support testing of essential electrical systems including lighting and nurse call.
  • Assist with engineering programmes while ensuring HTMs and standards compliance.
  • Maintain records and contribute to surveys and audits.
  • Participate in on-call rota to ensure continuity of electrical services.

Job overview

The Electrical Assistant (Band 3) plays a key role in supporting the delivery of safe, effective and compliant electrical maintenance services across all Oxford University Hospitals sites. Working within the Estates and Facilities Department, the post holder undertakes planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs and minor installation works to ensure the continuous operation of critical engineering systems that support patient care. The role contributes to maintaining compliance with statutory legislation, Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), British Standards and Trust policies while responding promptly to maintenance requests across both clinical and non-clinical environments.

This is a full-time Band 3 position (37.5 hours per week) with a Recruitment & Retention Premium (RRP), plus opportunities to earn additional income through overtime and participation in the on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

EF15QP

  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance and minor repair works on electrical installations and associated building services across all Trust sites to ensure safe, reliable and compliant operation.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests, diagnose faults and carry out repairs or assist competent electrical staff with more complex works, ensuring minimal disruption to clinical services.
  • Support the maintenance and testing of essential electrical systems, including lighting, emergency lighting, small power, nurse call systems and other critical infrastructure that directly supports patient care.
  • Assist with planned engineering programmes and electrical installation works, ensuring compliance with Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), British Standards, statutory regulations and Trust policies.
  • Complete maintenance records, job documentation, timesheets and inspection reports accurately using Trust maintenance systems while contributing to estates' surveys and audits.
  • Participate in the Trust's out-of-hours on-call rota and respond to emergency maintenance incidents, ensuring continuity of critical engineering services across all hospital sites.

Person specification
Qualifications & Training
  • Recognised and registered EITB, City & Guilds, modern apprenticeship, NVQ level 2 or approved equivalent training in Electrical/Engineering
  • NC/HNC/HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrable in-depth knowledge and experience within the required technical disciplines (e.g.: Fire Alarms, Small Power, Lighting, Emergency Lighting, standby power systems, BMS, Nurse Call Systems, Facilities Management Software etc.)
  • Trained in Health & Safety, i.e. First Aid, NEBOSH, IOSH, etc
  • Registration with approved organisations, i.e. UK Register of Electricians, JIB Schemes, Gas Safe, etc.
  • Member of relevant healthcare or engineering institutes, i.e. IHEEM, HEFMA, CIBSE, IET etc
  • Experience across several of the HTM’s acting as either a CP or AP
  • Full Driving Licence
Knowledge and Experience
  • Knowledge of maintenance methodologies
  • Knowledge of HTM’s, HBN’s and Estates specific legislation
  • Specialist knowledge gained from working in a health care engineering environment or prepared to work towards gaining
  • Must be multi-skilled in Electrical Trades
