Job description

Established in 2013, Weybourne is the Family Office for a High Net Worth family. Weybourne manages investments and provides financial and other professional support to the Family, their estates, and business interests. We are seeking a fully qualified and experienced Gardener for one of our large private Estates on the Wiltshire/Somerset border, to help lead the next stage in the transformation and future evolution of this historically important Estate.

Job Purpose:

The Gardener must provide mentoring and support to the Garden team to develop the organic walled garden in the production of fruit and vegetables. They will work under the Head Gardener and will help with the development, maintenance, and safety of the estate while developing existing ground staff’s skills and experience in organic produce. They must demonstrate sound technical knowledge of industry standards with an emphasis on organic methods and a good understanding of Soil Association provisions, supporting the Head Gardener to achieve outstanding results. An innovative and enthusiastic approach is essential for long-term planning of grounds upkeep and renovation.

The successful applicant will need to integrate well within a small team, ensuring that gardens, lawns, and the designed landscape are maintained to the highest standards. A recognised qualification supported by significant post-qualification experience is required.

You should have excellent communication skills, a practical approach, plenty of energy, and a willingness to engage in hands-on work with the team.

This position suits someone interested in and understanding of this historically significant garden, with a commitment to its future development. Flexibility in working hours is essential due to the garden's scope.

While the gardens feature many mature plants, there is considerable scope for design and planting plan enhancements, which will evolve with the Estate Manager.

You will have the exciting opportunity to lead garden design and forestry projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Understanding and contributing to the master plan and recognizing the gardens' historical importance.
  2. Designing new elements and rejuvenating existing ones, maintaining accurate plans and records.
  3. Supporting garden operations, team, and equipment management.
  4. Collaborating with the Head Gardener on planning, budgets, and future developments.
  5. Ensuring compliance with Health and Safety and COSHH regulations.
  6. Providing exceptional lawn care, weed management, and annual maintenance.
  7. Managing soil health in accordance with Soil Association practices.
  8. Understanding chemical-free and fully organic maintenance methods.

Requirements:

Person Specification / Core Competencies:

  • Relevant horticulture qualifications (e.g., NCH, HND, OND, City & Guilds, RHS Level 2 or similar).
  • Strong horticultural knowledge.
  • Deep understanding of organic methods.
  • Technical knowledge of machinery and servicing.
  • Risk management, COSHH, and safety awareness.
  • Methodical planning skills.
  • Garden design and planning expertise.
  • Confident communication skills, capable of engaging with diverse individuals.
  • Proactive and adaptable work approach.
  • Willingness to take responsibility and ownership of tasks.
  • Discretion and confidentiality awareness.
