Overview

ESPN is looking for a talented features editor and writer to help drive the growth of ESPN's football properties in EMEA. With a background in sports, excellent digital skills, a deep understanding of SEO, analytics and a strong knowledge of football, the candidate will play a vital role in assisting our editors and reporters across regions as well as generating their own work. Candidates will have experience of working in a digital sports environment and must possess an outstanding devotion to storytelling in football. They will bring urgency, drive and instinctively understand which stories will resonate across different platforms. The position will pay particular attention to trending / viral football content, transfer coverage and live blogging (both writing and editing). Candidates will work in a dynamic environment, with the ability to make an important impact on ESPN's future production. Candidates should be comfortable working multiple weekends, late nights and flexible hours, with most shifts based at our London offices in Hammersmith.

Responsibilities
  • Identify stories that will resonate with our audience and look for the most creative angles and platforms on which to tell them.
  • Edit and assign football features on a daily basis, ensuring the right stories are prioritized. Work with ESPN's reporters, in particular in the areas of transfers, trending content and live blogs across European and global football, to deliver outstanding copy.
  • Set clear digital publishing guidelines to ensure the right blend, timing and volume of content to meet the ESPN mission to 'Serve Sports Fans. Anytime. Anywhere.'
  • Demonstrate the ability to work on longer term strategic and creative projects.
  • Effectively and decisively communicate with the wider global team across regions, ensuring optimum distribution of key content.
  • Use data to inform decision-making at all times.
  • Show a collaborative approach across ESPN teams locally and globally, including social media and video production.
  • Champion ESPN's approach to diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience of working in a busy digital sports environment.
  • Excellent football knowledge, with a strong focus on European leagues, transfers and women's football.
  • Expertise in SEO, digital publishing and the ability to use metrics to drive audience growth.
  • Creative mindset and ability to look to new avenues and formats for the distribution of content.
  • Highest standards of written English, excellent editing skills, top-class attention to detail and a talent for finding and demanding the strongest news lines.
  • Great communication skills.
  • Able to work legally in the United Kingdom.
  • Experience writing sports content (especially football content) and working with reporters in a highly competitive, rapidly changing environment.
  • The ability to speak a second language is a huge plus.
