Job Description:

Applications are invited for the prestigious Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellowships, a program of Schmidt Sciences, commencing 1 September 2026. There are up to 8 positions available, with a duration of 2 years.

The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellows will produce independent and original research, using AI to advance science within their host department and the I-X Centre for AI in Science. These fellowships aim to identify excellent researchers and accelerate their use of AI to advance and disrupt science or engineering. AI is interpreted broadly, including topics like Bayesian Inference and Robotics; science areas such as Epidemiology, Biology, and basic biomedicine (excluding clinical medical themes and medical imaging). Examples include Bayesian optimization for molecular or materials design, machine learning for single-cell data, and physics-based ML for turbine design and astrostatistics. These posts are not suitable for general AI research; candidates should aim to substantially advance a specific scientific area. Applicants may see themselves as AI researchers addressing particular scientific questions or as science researchers using AI as a tool. Extensive AI knowledge is not required; training will be provided.

Candidates will:

  • Hold or be near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline.
  • Demonstrate potential for leadership qualities in the subject, e.g., through initiative in research projects.
  • Have an outstanding research record, including thesis, publications, conference presentations, or code.
  • Present a proposal within the AI in Science remit, with skills fitting the cohort of AI in Science fellows.

Fellows will join the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Network of researchers and a co-located cohort at the I-X Centre for AI in Science, with tailored training and career development. The fellowships are flexible and independent, with mentorship options.

We offer additional support for women in AI in Science, including extra funds for career development and a community of women in AI. The I-X Women in Artificial Intelligence initiative, founded by current Fellows, aims to enhance women’s representation and support. At least one candidate will be appointed through this route.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years, based at White City Campus.

Applicants without an official PhD will be appointed as Research Assistants.

Fellowships for more experienced researchers are also available. For consideration at the Research Fellow level, submit an additional application (documents can be reused). For 4-year roles, apply for the Imperial College Research Fellowships supported by Schmidt Sciences.

Other Schmidt Sciences Fellowship roles at Research Associate and Research Fellow levels are available.
