At the North Dakota Department of Transportation, we offer rewarding work opportunities with a competitive employee benefits package, including a fully paid family health insurance plan, paid leave, retirement options, work-life balance and flexibility, tuition reimbursement, and more!

Filling this position as an Equipment Operator in Training may be considered if we cannot fill the role as an Operator I or Operator II. The salary for this position is $4,075 per month.

*This position qualifies for a Regional Pay Differential of $800 per month.

Summary of Work

As an Equipment Operator, you will perform highway, roadway, and structure maintenance, including operating heavy equipment for snow and ice control/removal, installing, repairing, and maintaining highway signs and guardrails. You will operate power tools and other equipment to complete these tasks and others assigned. A key responsibility is keeping roadways clear of hazards such as litter, waste, debris, garbage, and carcasses.

You will also handle building and ground maintenance, routine roadway and radio system maintenance, and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment. Maintaining necessary paperwork, such as time records, activity reports, daily diaries, and road reports, is part of your duties. You will receive training and perform construction project duties under close supervision.

An essential aspect of this role and the NDDOT culture is maintaining a safe working environment for yourself, your coworkers, and others.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify as an Equipment Operator II, you must have a valid North Dakota Class A driver license without air brake restrictions and a cargo tank endorsement (N) by the first day of work, along with two years of relevant experience or one year of experience plus one winter season of operations similar to NDDOT.

For Equipment Operator I, a valid North Dakota Class B driver license without air brake restrictions is required.

The employee will have 12 months to obtain a North Dakota Class A driver license without restrictions and a cargo tank endorsement (N).
