Job description

My client is looking for a proactive and capable Equine vet with a strong interest in orthopaedics to help manage and expand the caseload, while also contributing to the diverse caseload of ambulatory work. The experienced team already includes vets with extensive diagnostic and surgical skills, and they are keen to support the development of another dedicated professional in this area. If you want to expand your skills while working with a thoroughbred racehorse caseload, and you’re looking for your next challenge within a supportive, flexible, and forward-thinking team, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

Prior experience with racehorses would be beneficial, but it is not essential—enthusiasm and a desire to learn are more important. This practice is a dedicated equine practice based near York, with a vision to become the most highly recommended practice in North Yorkshire. With an experienced and motivated team consisting of five vets, two nurses, two nursing assistants, and three office-based team members, they handle a varied ambulatory caseload, from children’s ponies and competition horses to elite racehorses, while also providing veterinary cover at York racecourse and local point-to-points.

Equipped with multiple DR systems, scanners, scopes, ECSWT, and dental equipment, they deliver a comprehensive ambulatory service. Their other clinics allow for further investigations and treatments that cannot be performed on the road. The local area offers a wealth of outdoor activities, with the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, and the coast all within easy reach. For those who enjoy city life, London is just a two-hour train journey away.

The working rota is flexible and can be tailored to suit individual preferences, with half of the out-of-hours cover serviced by EquiCall. Currently, the rota is 1:10, and any weekend on-call duty is followed by a Friday off. They actively encourage further professional development, with all but one of the vets holding certificate qualifications or other postgraduate degrees. If you are looking to pursue a certificate or additional training, they will fully support and fund your ambitions.

This role comes with an excellent benefits package, including 7.2 weeks of holiday (including bank holidays, plus extra time off over the Christmas period), a £1,750 CPD allowance with additional funded BEVA congress attendance, and full support for certificate or further qualifications. They cover professional fees for RCVS, BVA, ARVS, or equivalent, and a company vehicle is available if required. Other perks include discounted veterinary care, a provided mobile phone, and a range of additional benefits such as pension contributions, HealthShield, enhanced parental leave, and access to CPD and collaboration across our wider network.

If you are passionate about equine veterinary care and looking to take the next step in your career within a progressive and supportive team, we would love to hear from you.
