Epidemiologists play essential roles in our teams.

In the midst of an outbreak, our project teams look to our epidemiologists to learn where and how fast a disease is spreading, and how it can be stopped. From Ebola outbreaks in Liberia to predicting cholera outbreaks in Haiti after an earthquake, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) epidemiologists save lives.

Responsibilities

MSF epidemiologists work in a variety of contexts, and may be either based in a country coordination centre or out in a field project. They may support one or many projects, and work on issues ranging from mortality surveys to mapping disease spread.

It’s a diverse role with responsibilities that may include:

• Conducting community surveys
• Creating reports for project planning
• Planning responses to outbreaks, such as active case finding, vaccination campaigns, WATSAN interventions (e.g., meningitis, measles, cholera), or mortality surveys
• Setting up surveillance systems in MSF hospitals or communities
• Building capacity of medical teams to analyze and interpret data for evidence-based decisions

Role requirements

• Degree or Master's in Epidemiology, or MPH with extensive epidemiology training
• Practical skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating epidemiological research methods
• Ability to design and implement surveillance and data collection systems for disease monitoring, including mortality and nutritional surveys, and to train others in data collection and analysis
• Proficiency with epidemiological database and statistical analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel and at least one statistical program)
• At least one year of experience working in low- or middle-income countries or similar environments
• Leadership skills to supervise, manage, and train team members
• Ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams
• Organizational and prioritization skills, with initiative when needed
• Willingness to work in unstable environments
• Availability to work up to nine months (with opportunities for shorter roles depending on current needs)
• Fluency in English

Assets

• Medical or biomedical background
• Familiarity with tropical and infectious diseases
• Previous experience in similar roles with NGOs
• Experience working in unstable environments

Languages

We are currently seeking epidemiologists who speak good French or Arabic. If you speak French or Arabic, you are more likely to be accepted onto our register. Your language skills may be tested during recruitment.
