Job description
Overview

Are you technically minded with a practical approach to solving problems? Do you have land management and/or environmental experience and love working outdoors? This is an exciting opportunity to join our Catchment Science team as an Environmental Technician. You will be part of a small team of scientists and technicians carrying out strategic sampling that provides soil, water, and crop data to support catchment management activities and to evidence their impact. The role is predominantly field-based but includes office tasks such as processing data, assisting with quality control (QC), data analysis, and interpretation. The role is based in Corfe Mullen, Dorset, and involves travel across our region.

What you’ll do
  • Undertake in-field agricultural and environmental monitoring, such as river flow and groundwater level monitoring, water quality sampling and soil sampling.
  • Help plan and install monitoring installations on farms and in waterbodies.
  • Maintain, service and calibrate monitoring equipment to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Liaise with farmers, landowners and other Wessex Water teams to organise and carry out sampling tasks or longer-term monitoring projects.
  • Data QC, handling, mapping and other administrative tasks essential to support the monitoring projects.
  • Communicate work undertaken to team members and other internal and external stakeholders.
What you’ll need

In this role, we are looking for someone with:

  • High levels of motivation and enthusiasm, with a good understanding of environmental and land management issues.
  • Good practical skills and the ability to work independently within health and safety requirements and to use own initiative to solve problems.
  • A willingness to learn and develop through on‑the‑job experience and appropriate academic or vocational qualifications.
  • A methodical and well-organised approach with strong attention to detail and the ability to plan your own workload.
  • Aptitude to switch between working in the field and office environments, either alone or as part of a team.
  • The ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, and a good understanding of effective communication for different situations.
  • A‑levels or equivalent vocational qualifications in Environmental Science or related subjects.

Desirable

  • Practical experience in a land-based or environmental role (training can be provided).
  • Experience in data quality control, basic data analysis and statistics.
  • Experience operating and maintaining remote-monitoring equipment, including multi-parameter sondes and autosamplers.
  • A good knowledge of agriculture and an understanding of common land-use practices, with an appreciation of their potential impact on water quality.
  • Health and safety experience and knowledge, including the preparation of risk assessments and method statements.
  • A degree in Environmental Science or a related subject, or relevant technical experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and GIS mapping programs.
  • An understanding of conservation and environmental legislation.
What you’ll receive
  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days\' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to sell up to five days of holiday every year.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days of holiday each year (subject to conditions).
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • The opportunity to lease a new electric car through salary sacrifice (subject to conditions).
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • Access to an interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from trained mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone who is successfully recruited by us.
