Job description

Background: The UK Space Agency:

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) is an executive agency of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) that provides technical advice on the government’s space strategy, supporting the UK space sector to deliver the government’s vision.

Space is a part of everyday life. Satellites underpin our national economy, from agriculture and banking to aviation and shipping, and support our national security. Space science provides critical data to understand and address global challenges such as climate change, while missions to explore our solar system unite nations and advance humanity’s horizons.

We support a thriving space sector in the UK, which generates an annual income of £18.9 billion and employs 52,028 people across the country.

Through our portfolio of programmes and projects, we encourage the development of national space capabilities and are an early-stage investor in space research and development. We also promote the UK space sector’s interests and achievements; make connections to join up industry and academia; and represent the UK in international space programmes.

We have a powerful global voice, partnering with institutions across the world, including the European Space Agency.

Working with colleagues across the Agency and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), including Finance, People and Corporate Operations, you will be responsible for developing and leading the delivery of the UK Space Agency Sustainability Strategy.

This role is pivotal in shaping the UK Space Agency’s journey in reducing our carbon impact in line with the government’s Net Zero commitments. The Sustainability Lead will be responsible for:

  • Providing high-quality reporting to UK Space Agency senior leaders and Decision Boards on environmental and sustainability performance.
  • Identifying, modelling (with support from UK Space Agency Finance), and reducing exposure to climate change-related risks, ensuring compliance with Treasury Sustainability Reporting Guidance, including the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures.
  • Championing sustainability and environmental considerations as a key element of all property decision-making, including estate strategy development.
  • Ensuring best practices in Corporate Technology / Digital sustainability for environmental performance and social value.
  • Representing the UK Space Agency in collaborations with other government departments to share and understand best practices for sustainability.
  • Partnering with the Government Property Agency to set sustainability KPIs and analyze sustainability and environmental data for reporting purposes.
  • Embedding behavior change, improving biodiversity of the estate, and delivering on Net Zero targets by reducing carbon and heat emissions.
  • Reviewing the UK Space Agency Value Chain and identifying options for suppliers and contractors to demonstrate high environmental performance and social value.
  • Reducing waste across utilities, air travel, paper, and landfill.

You will work within the Launch, In-Orbit Servicing and Manufacturing (ISAM), and Sustainability Directorate, reporting to the Head of ISAM and Sustainability. Your role will include policy support, reporting, analysis, estates reviews, and influencing long-term sustainability roadmaps that set organizational standards for environmental stewardship.
