Job summary

London Borough of Tower Hamlets is seeking an Environmental Services Technical Officer - Development Control to join the Environmental Services Improvement Team. You will guide waste planning aspects of developments to promote reuse and recycling and ensure facilities meet residents’ needs.

The role focuses on technical advice, handling planning applications from inception to completion, and working with housing providers to inspect new developments for fit-for-purpose waste management.0

About The Role

We are recruiting for an Environmental Services Technical Officer - Development Control to join our Environmental Services Improvement Team.

If you are passionate about the environment, committed to achieving positive outcomes, and have experience in waste and recycling planning, we would love to hear from you.

In this role, you will have a real and lasting impact on residents' daily lives, as well as on the environmental quality, sustainability and service delivery of new developments. You will help ensure that developments provide well-designed waste and recycling facilities that encourage reuse and recycling while meeting the needs of residents, caretakers and collection operatives.

In this role, you will:

  • Be the lead officer responsible for providing technical advice, knowledge and expertise on waste planning and development control matters, including the validation and rejection of non-compliant development plans and proposals.
  • Act as the main point of contact for developers/planners, providing waste management advice and support from the inception of a planning application through to project completion.
  • Work with Waste Operations teams and housing providers to inspect newly built developments and ensure that waste management facilities are fit for purpose.

About You

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • A proven track record of providing advice and guidance and making informed decisions in relation to waste planning applications.
  • Detailed knowledge and a strong understanding of current policy, legislation and best practice relating to waste management.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively across a diverse community and with a wide range of stakeholders.
