Job summary

Westmorland and Furness Council is seeking a professionally qualified Environmental Health Officer to lead a busy Public Protection team and deliver investigations, inspections and enforcement across Statutory Nuisance, Drainage, Pest Control, Air Quality, Environmental Permitting, Contaminated Land, Private Water Supplies and Bathing Water Quality.

You will provide legal and technical advice, manage and develop the service, and travel regularly across the Westmorland and Furness area.

Qualifications

  • Fully qualified Environmental Health Officer or Registered Environmental Health Practitioner.
  • Experience delivering statutory nuisance, drainage, pest control, air quality and related duties.
  • Additional qualifications in Environmental Protection are advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Lead investigations, inspections and enforcement across Statutory Nuisance, Drainage, Pest Control, Air Quality, Environmental Permitting, Contaminated Land, Private Water Supplies and Bathing Water Quality.
  • Provide legal and technical advice to the council, companies and individuals on environmental health matters.
  • Manage workload, supervise and develop the Public Protection service; travel across the Westmorland and Furness area.

Job description

The advertised salary includes a supplement (JWC) to the base grade of the post. JWC supplements are conditional on the physical demands and /or working conditions of the role.

Westmorland and Furness Council is looking for a professionally qualified and skilled officer who is competent and confident to manage, supervise and support a dedicated team in their increasingly busy and demanding day to day duties and to be responsible for the delivery of investigations, inspections and enforcement of Statutory Nuisance, Drainage, Pest Control, Air Quality, Environmental Permitting, Contaminated Land, Private Water Supplies and Bathing Water Quality issues as part of the Public Protection Team. You will possess robust and up to date knowledge in all of these areas, be able to demonstrate excellent people, performance and resource management skills.

Who we are looking for…

You will be a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer or Registered Environmental Health Practitioner, as lead officer you will also be responsible for the provision of legal and technical advice to the council, companies and individuals on Statutory Nuisance, Drainage, Pest Control, Air Quality, Environmental Permitting, Contaminated Land, Private Water Supplies and Bathing Water Quality issues.

Additional qualifications in Environmental Protection (equivalent to Diploma or above) for example in Acoustics & Noise Control, Air Quality, Environmental Permitting, Private Water Supplies or Contaminated Land, would be an advantage.

You will be expected to manage a practical personal workload and assist in the supervision, management and development of the service. To be successful, you will be a self-motivated and enthusiastic team player, possessing excellent communication, organisational and analytical skills. This post is ideal for someone looking to progress their career with a new unitary authority.

As part of this role, there is a requirement for regular travel and so the postholder must be able to drive and have access to a vehicle to use for work/ able to independently travel around the Westmorland and Furness area.
