Our client is seeking a dynamic and hands-on Environmental Protection Team Lead to lead and support a high-performing team delivering a broad range of statutory environmental health services. This is a great opportunity to take on a senior role with real impact – managing day-to-day delivery, mentoring officers, and holding a personal caseload of complex work.

About the Role

The client is looking for someone who can lead from the front, handling team leadership, officer development, and their own investigations. You'll manage service delivery across:

  • Pollution Control (LAPPC, PPC)
  • Air Quality and Contaminated Land
  • Statutory Nuisance Investigations
  • Private Water Supplies and Smoke Control
  • Planning & Licensing consultations

You’ll help shape service strategy, resolve high-profile or complex issues, and play a key part in staff training, coaching, and mentoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Environmental Protection team operationally and strategically
  • Oversee performance, work allocation, training and appraisals
  • Personally handle complex or contentious cases
  • Maintain and develop operational standards, compliance and SOPs
  • Support the Environmental Health Business Manager in budget management and strategic planning
  • Represent the service internally and externally, including complaints and appeal responses
  • Support emergency response and out-of-hours services (as required)

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in environmental protection, with a strong working knowledge of environmental health legislation
  • Leadership or supervisory experience within local authority or similar setting
  • Hands-on technical expertise – able to carry and manage your own caseload
  • Excellent mentoring, coaching, and team development skills
  • Confident communicator, able to liaise at all levels internally and externally
  • Member of CIEH or equivalent professional body is desirable
