Job summary

Buckinghamshire Council is seeking an Environmental Protection Officer to investigate and enforce environmental health regulations across diverse sites. You will manage a caseload, address noise and nuisance complaints, assess planning inputs, and contribute to major projects with specialist input.

We welcome flexible working and potential for job share or part‑time arrangements. A full driving licence and reactive, customer‑facing duties are key aspects of the role.

Qualifications

• Diploma, Degree or MSc in Environmental Health or equivalent.
• Substantial experience in environmental protection, including noise and statutory nuisance.
• Expert knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, best practices, systems and policies.
• Proven ability to conduct formal interviews, gather evidence, and handle sensitive issues.
• Ability to work collaboratively with teams and external agencies to deliver a customer‑focused service.
• Full driving licence and flexibility to work outside normal hours.

Responsibilities

• Investigate cases and take informal and formal action as appropriate.
• Manage a personal caseload of reactive environmental protection work.
• Investigate noise and nuisance complaints and coordinate with partner agencies.
• Assess licensing and planning applications and attend hearings.
• Provide specialist environmental input on large developments.
• Offer training and support to colleagues to maintain regulatory competencies.
