Job description
Overview

Ready to take the lead on one of the UK's most complex and high-profile highways projects?

This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading UK civil engineering and infrastructure contractor as Environmental Sustainability Manager on a new major highways scheme - a multi-year programme delivering vital improvements to regional connectivity and resilience.

With construction now underway, this role offers the chance to take ownership of environmental performance on a complex linear infrastructure project - shaping best practice, mentoring junior staff and driving compliance and innovation across a major programme of works.

The Project

Spanning several kilometres of new carriageway, bridges, underpasses, and river crossings, this large-scale highways project is a flagship investment in sustainable transport infrastructure.

You\'ll be joining a highly collaborative and well-established delivery team known for its positive culture, strong wellbeing ethos and hands-on teamwork across disciplines.

What You\'ll Be Doing
  • As Environmental Sustainability Manager, you\'ll be the project\'s go-to environmental expert - providing practical site-based guidance and ensuring compliance across all works
  • Acting as an active member of the project leadership team - embedding environmental considerations into all aspects of delivery
  • Leading environmental management during construction and ensuring compliance with all consents, licences, and permits
  • Promoting a proactive environmental culture through engagement with project teams, the client, regulators, and the supply chain
  • Investigating and reporting environmental incidents, sharing lessons learned, and driving continuous improvement
What We\'re Looking For
  • We\'re seeking a confident, practical environmental professional who thrives on complex site challenges and enjoys being embedded within delivery teams
  • Proven experience in environmental management within major infrastructure or construction projects (ideally roads, rail, power, or utilities)
  • A strong understanding of environmental compliance during construction, particularly water management and ecological constraints
  • Experience managing consents, discharge permits, and liaising with regulators
  • Confidence operating at senior-advisor or manager level within large, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ideally, a relevant degree (Environmental Science, Environmental Management, etc.)

This is a hands-on, site-based role - ideal for someone who enjoys being at the heart of project delivery and influencing outcomes on the ground, not from a corporate office.

What\'s on Offer
  • A competitive basic salary
  • Car allowance or company car and all expenses paid
  • Private healthcare - family cover
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Annual bonus scheme
  • Hybrid and flexible working available
  • Pension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave and recognition schemes
  • Family-friendly policies including enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • Ongoing Training & Development opportunities
Why Join
  • A long-term role on one of the UK's most complex and high-profile highways projects
  • Real opportunities and clear progression pathways to senior leadership positions within a significant and rapidly growing Environment & Sustainability function
  • Join a Tier 1 contractor with one of the best reputations for culture and collaboration in UK infrastructure
  • Make a visible impact on environmental performance, innovation, and sustainability outcomes
  • Enjoy the backing of a business with a strong project pipeline and commitment to developing its people
  • A genuinely positive team culture - collaborative, respectful and focused on wellbeing and delivery excellence

If you\'re a Senior Environmental Advisor ready to step up, or an established Environmental Manager seeking a new challenge on a landmark highways scheme - we\'d love to hear from you.
