Job summary

Costain is seeking an experienced Environmental Lead to oversee the environmental function for the Capenhurst HALEU Advanced Fuels Facility programme. The role focuses on water management, regulatory engagement, and ensuring compliance with nuclear-site requirements.

The candidate will develop mitigation plans, manage environmental training delivery, and support supply chain contractors while reporting data to leadership for continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • 5 years environmental experience in a Nuclear Licensed / High-Hazard environment.
  • Experience obtaining environmental permits and building relationships with regulatory authorities.
  • Strong background in water management including surface water and groundwater protection.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring, reporting and data analysis.
  • Experience handling environmental incidents, investigations and corrective actions.
  • Degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or related field.

  • Provide environmental data reporting and analysis to influence leadership decisions.
  • Collaborate with Costain and client teams on programme management at the client’s premises.

Job description

  • Lead the environmental function for the HALEU Advanced Fuels Facility programme at Capenhurst
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits, and nuclear-site requirements
  • Manage water compliance, including surface water control, groundwater protection, drainage systems, pollution prevention, and trade effluent discharge
  • Support the contract team and advise the client on obtaining environmental permits and establishing controls for permit compliance
  • Support and influence Contract Leadership and client teams in implementing the SHE Management System
  • Identify, assess, and manage water-related environmental risks, contamination pathways, hydrological impacts, and construction-related water hazards
  • Develop mitigation plans and monitor their effectiveness
  • Ensure delivery of environmental training by competent individuals
  • Support appointment, onboarding, and ongoing assessment of supply chain contractors
  • Develop and implement a contract-specific environmental and water-management assurance programme, including monitoring, inspections, and audits
  • Ensure unplanned events and assurance findings are categorised, investigated, and lessons learned are shared
  • Provide environmental data reporting and analysis to influence leadership decisions and develop improvement plans aligned with KPIs and sustainability frameworks
  • Collaborate with the Costain team and client on programme management and delivery at the client’s premises
Requirements
  • 5 years environmental experience within a Nuclear Licenced / High-Hazard environment
  • Experience of obtaining environmental permits and developing strategic relationships with regulatory authorities including the Environment Agency
  • Demonstrable experience in water management, including surface water, groundwater protection, drainage systems, pollution prevention, and regulatory engagement
  • Strong background in environmental monitoring, reporting, and data analysis
  • Experience managing environmental incidents, investigations, and corrective actions
  • Relevant Degree or equivalent (NVQ Level 6) in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or related discipline
  • Applicants are expected to achieve baseline and SC security levels
  • Willingness to work within an integrated team at the client’s premises
  • Desirable: experience contributing to sustainability, decarbonisation, or nature-positive programmes
  • Desirable: experience working with external auditors, certification bodies, or environmental consultants
  • Desirable: Environmental Degree (BSc/MSc)
  • Desirable: Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 Line Managers toolkit or equivalent
  • Desirable: Commercial awareness
  • Desirable: Programme/project management training
  • Desirable: Specialist environmental courses, e.g. noise measurement, waste, contaminated land, CL:AIRE DOWCOP
