The successful candidate will provide authoritative environmental leadership across engineering, design, programme governance and delivery decision‑making.

This position would suit an experienced environmental professional with a strong background in regulated, complex or novel technology environments such as nuclear, energy, defence, infrastructure, engineering or major projects.

The Opportunity

This is a chance to play a key role in shaping environmental strategy across the full lifecycle of a major engineering programme, from concept design through to decommissioning.

The Environmental Manager will ensure environmental considerations are built into technical decisions from the outset, helping to minimise environmental impact while supporting regulatory compliance, environmental assurance and long‑term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and continual refinement of the Environmental Case, ensuring alignment with design maturity and regulatory expectations
  • Embed Design for Environment principles into engineering workflows, design reviews, requirements management and system‑level decision‑making
  • Lead environmental hazard identification, including ENVIDs, and influence mitigation strategies
  • Champion opportunities for environmental improvement and enhancement across the programme
  • Direct environmental modelling, lifecycle impact assessments and Best Available Techniques evaluations
  • Support environmental compliance across governance, legislation and emerging regulatory frameworks
  • Act as the main environmental interface with engineering teams, programme leadership, regulators and external stakeholders
  • Develop, track and report environmental KPIs to inform programme‑level decisions
  • Lead preparation of EIA scoping inputs and support the planning and consenting process
  • Interpret and challenge environmental modelling outputs relating to emissions, waste, water and ecology
  • Support circular economy principles, resource efficiency, waste minimisation and sustainable materials selection
Essential Requirements
  • Strong experience in Lifecycle Assessment, carbon modelling, materials impact analysis and end‑of‑life planning
  • Strong working knowledge of BAT principles, justification processes and their application in regulated environments
  • Experience facilitating ENVIDs and environmental risk assessments
  • Ability to integrate environmental findings into engineering assurance and design decision‑making
  • Deep understanding of UK environmental law, EIA regulations, environmental permitting and compliance frameworks
  • Experience working within structured environmental governance environments
  • Background in nuclear, energy, defence, infrastructure or another highly regulated sector would be highly beneficial
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work with engineering teams, senior programme leaders, regulators and external partners
  • Confident, proactive and technically credible environmental professional
