We are seeking a suitably experienced individual to help deliver our environmental health services to the people and businesses of Orkney.

Reporting directly to the Service Manager you will have responsibility for a busy and varied caseload of environmental health work throughout Orkney. Working in a small team you will plan and undertake investigations, inspections and visits along with taking the necessary actions to provide advice, guidance and support to ensure compliance with the law and that risks to health are appropriately managed.

Working knowledge of environmental health legislation is required along with the confidence to manage your own casework and conflicting demands with limited management supervision. Some work out of hours may be necessary, as will be the ability to travel throughout Orkney.

Applicants with a specific interest and skills in private sector housing and environmental protection are particularly welcome to apply and an additional qualification in acoustics and noise control would be advantageous but not essential. You will need to demonstrate a commitment to quality service delivery and self-improvement by undertaking a scheme of relevant continuous professional development and be willing to help out with all aspects of environmental health work within our small team, as appropriate to your qualifications.

A science based honours degree is essential.

A current UK driving licence is essential.

Orkney is regularly voted as one of the best places to live in the UK and if you are looking to combine your enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise in environmental health with an excellent quality of life, then we would love to hear from you.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Nick Long, Service Manager (Environmental Health), by e-mail: nick.long@orkney.gov.uk or telephone: 01856 873535.
