Job description

Bury Council are seeking a qualified and experienced Environmental Health Officer to join our Commercial Team within the Public Protection Service. You will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and ensuring regulatory compliance across a wide range of commercial premises. Through proactive inspections, investigations and enforcement. Your responsibilities will include:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Food safety & Hygiene inspections, conduct routine and reactive inspections of food businesses in accordance with the Food Standards Agency guidelines, ensuring compliance with hygiene regulations and identifying area for improvement.
  • Health & Safety Enforcement, carry out inspections and assessments under health and safety legislation, identifying risks and enforcing appropriate controls to protect workers and the public.
  • Statutory nuisance investigations, investigate reports of statutory nuisance. Use tools such as the Noise App to gather evidence and assess impact, taking enforcement action where necessary.
  • Sampling and analysis, undertake formal and informal sampling of food, water, or environmental material. Interpret laboratory results and take appropriate follow-up actions based on findings.
  • Public and Business engagement, provide clear, practical advice to businesses and members of the public on environmental health matters, promoting best practices and legal compliance.
  • Planning application consultation, review and provide expert environmental health input on planning applications, ensuring that public health considerations are integrated into development proposals.
  • Enforcement and legal action. Prepare and serve statutory notice, compile evidence for legal proceedings and represent the service in court when required.
  • Complaint investigations, respond to and investigate complaints related to commercial premises, including food safety, hygiene, health and safety and statutory nuisance.

This is a permanent position with a salary range £41,771 - £44,075.
