Environmental Engineer Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

The Environmental Engineer is responsible for supporting the Environment & Sustainability Program at the McCormick Peterborough site. Reporting to the SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) Lead, this role involves reviewing and continuously improving environmental policies, practices, and processes to ensure compliance with local environmental regulations while applying engineering knowledge to identify and deliver sustainability opportunities aligned with McCormick's PLP (Purpose-led Performance) Agenda.

The role requires high visibility, influencing, training, coaching, and desk-based activities. Tasks include day-to-day operations, long-term continuous improvement projects, new equipment installation, and site expansion in a dynamic environment. Priorities may shift based on organizational assessments and risks.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Manage the Environmental Management System to ensure statutory compliance and support McCormick's sustainability agenda.
  2. Guide and assist Crew Leads and SHE committee members in meeting legal and program requirements, including workplace audits and incident investigations.
  3. Implement environmental initiatives, report progress, and provide feedback to regional stakeholders.
  4. Develop policies and procedures related to environmental activities and communicate effectively.
  5. Coordinate legislative and compliance audits with cross-functional teams to achieve successful outcomes.
  6. Conduct timely incident investigations and follow up on corrective actions.
  7. Prepare and analyze daily, weekly, and periodic environmental KPIs.
  8. Source and procure site consumables and equipment related to environmental protection.
Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Sustainability fields (Chemical, Food Processing, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical).
  • Nebosh Environmental Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience as an Environmental Engineer, Supervisor, Coordinator, or similar role.
  • Experience in driving sustainability in automated process environments within FMCG, pharmaceutical, chemical, or oil & gas industries.
  • Knowledge of MCP & IPPC Permits, incident investigation, and UK compliance regulations.
  • Proven track record in improving utility efficiency, waste reduction, and developing indicators to influence behaviors.
  • Understanding of utility tracking and efficiency initiatives.
  • Strong communication, diplomacy, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Leadership qualities with the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and related software.
