Job description

Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for an Environmental and Consents Manager on a 12-month contract based in Leeds and York.

Role Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental and Consents Manager to oversee environmental management for the YORKSHIRE GREEN project. This project involves two new substations located at Overton (near York) and Monk Fryston (near Leeds).

In this role, you will be responsible for leading the delivery programme based on low-level solution design and scope, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. You will oversee all environmental and sustainability activities within the Smart Infrastructure team, a rapidly growing area in the UK.

The role encompasses strategic planning, project execution, risk management, subcontractor management, budget control, and client communication. You will contribute to the company's sustainability goals and uphold its reputation for environmental excellence.

You will act as a key contact for environmental issues across multiple projects and play a significant role in shaping the company's sustainable future.

As a senior team member, you will engage with clients and end users during pre-construction, construction, and handover phases. You will report to project senior stakeholders and resolve issues as they arise.

The project scale varies from small to over 0.5 million pounds, with multiple projects delivered concurrently as part of our digital growth strategy. Supporting team development will also be a key aspect of the role.

Main roles and responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Planning & Implementation: Develop and implement environmental and sustainability strategies aligned with corporate ESG targets.
  2. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA): Lead EIAs, including scoping, baseline surveys, impact prediction, mitigation, and report preparation, ensuring legal compliance.
  3. Environmental Management Systems (EMS): Develop, implement, and maintain EMSs according to ISO 14001 or similar standards.
  4. Permitting, Consenting & Compliance: Obtain necessary permits, ensure ongoing legal compliance, and manage incidents of non-compliance.
  5. Stakeholder Engagement: Build relationships with clients, regulators, local communities, and stakeholders, communicating environmental aspects proactively.
  6. Subcontractor Management: Manage environmental subcontractors, ensuring quality, safety, and adherence to timelines and budgets.
  7. Risk Management: Identify and mitigate environmental risks across projects.
  8. Due Diligence: Conduct assessments for project sites, identifying liabilities and developing remediation strategies.
  9. Reporting & Communication: Prepare reports and presentations for clients, management, and regulators.
  10. Budget & Resource Management: Manage environmental budgets and resources efficiently.
  11. Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on legislation, technology, and best practices; implement improvements.
  12. Mentorship & Training: Mentor junior staff and promote environmental awareness within the company.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of data lifecycle, data ethics, and legislation/standards such as GDPR, BS, ISO.
  • Awareness of environmental disciplines like noise, dust, vibration, CEEQUAL, BREEAM, carbon, energy efficiency, ecology, archaeology, arboriculture, and agriculture.
  • Experience with National Grid projects or similar energy infrastructure projects.
