The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) aims to protect and improve the natural environment. Established by the Environment Act 2021, our role is to hold government and public bodies in England and Northern Ireland accountable. We do this by reporting on progress towards environmental commitments, advising on legal changes, and handling public complaints, which can lead to investigations and enforcement actions.
This role is within the OEP’s Insights Directorate, which focuses on progressing our strategic goal of holding governments accountable for environmental goals and targets, in line with Environmental Improvement Plans (EIPs). Our priorities include improving land and sea nature, water quality, governance, and developing work on the circular economy, waste, chemicals, and soil health.
The role involves supporting the EIP assessment program in Northern Ireland and England, with a focus on progress in Northern Ireland.
The Insights Directorate also supports other OEP functions. With over 80 staff, the OEP is a dynamic, friendly, and flexible organization offering impactful work and flexible arrangements.
The Insights Directorate leads on holding the government accountable for environmental goals and plans for improvement. The successful candidate will work flexibly across various themes, supporting all activities of the directorate.
