Job description

You're agile, keen and open to meaningful work and opportunities that come your way.

You're looking to contribute to the transformation of the transport sector towards a greener and more sustainable future. You want to actively participate in shaping policies and initiatives that reduce carbon emissions, promote renewable energy adoption, and enhance the overall environmental performance of the transport network.

In this role, you’ll:

Provide environmental and sustainability advice to transport staff and contractors, supporting project teams to meet legislative, compliance and organisational requirements, whilst delivering positive outcomes for the communities of NSW. This is an excellent development opportunity, an opportunity to build your experience in Environmental & Sustainability (E&S) within the transport sector. Based within the Roads and Maritime operations team, you will support the delivery of environmental outcomes across roads, bridges and maritime assets throughout the Hunter Region, gaining hands‑on exposure to a diverse range of operational and project‑based activities. You will work within an embedded project team, preparing and reviewing environmental assessment documentation, identifying and managing environmental risks, providing practical guidance on sustainability strategies and environmental management, ensuring compliance, inspections and reporting are conducted in line with relevant legislation and policies. Success in the role requires balancing environmental obligations with project and stakeholder needs, applying best practice environmental and sustainability principles, and influencing effective outcomes across complex programmes of work. This role reports into an Environment & Sustainability Manager.

About You

For you to be successful within this role you should meet all the following criteria:

  • Up to 2 years experience in a similar environmental role, as outlined above.
  • We would also consider recent graduates with a degree in Environmental Science or a related discipline who are looking to build/commence their career in this field.
  • Degree in Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NSW and federal regulations requirements relating to good environmental practice, policies, and procedures.
  • A collaborative team player who enjoys working across a diverse range of projects, values field based work (and river based work!), and confidently asks questions to build knowledge and capabilities.
  • You're motivated and eager to learn, with a genuine passion for environmental and sustainability outcomes, and you have the ability to quickly grasp new concepts.
Nice to Haves:
  • Understanding of Blue Book (Erosion and Sediment Control).

This is a fixed‑term opportunity until 27th of August, 2027. To support team collaboration, you will be based in our Newcastle office and/or in the field every day.

This is a Grade 6 role, paying between $111,625.00 - $122,786.00 + super. The grade level will be assessed based on your relevant skills, experiences, capabilities, and qualifications etc.
