Environment News Reporter, New Scientist

Job Introduction

New Scientist is seeking an experienced newsreporter to cover the latest developments in climate change and environmental science as part of the London news team. We are particularly looking for journalists that equally comfortable writing about an academic paper as they are covering climate policy announcements – and helping readers to understand the gaps between policy and science.

You will pitch and write high-quality news stories and analysis pieces for the magazine, website, Earth Edition newsletter, and podcast, as well as writing in-depth features and working with other areas of the business, such as events, when required.

The winning candidate will be a reporter with experience in writing must-read stories. The position will begin in November 2025 as a 10-month maternity cover, and is a hybrid working role, with three days a week in our London office. We are happy to consider applications for part-time working.

Main Responsibilities

  • Stay on top of the latest developments in your field
  • Find exclusive, world-beating news stories
  • Develop contacts and report on conferences
  • Pitch stories to the news editors
  • Consistently produce high-quality stories for the magazine, website, podcast and other platforms, such as newsletters
  • Contribute to other areas of the magazine such as features, comment and culture

Person Specification

We are looking for an experienced science journalist who has previously worked on a news desk at a national or international publication. This is not an entry level role but would suit someone who already knows how to break stories and is looking for a position that allows them to do expert, in-depth journalism.

Essential knowledge and experience

  • At least three years' experience in relevant reporting on life and/or environmental science
  • A passionate interest in science and climate change
  • The ability to write clearly for a general interest audience while delving into relevant scientific detail with rigour

Desirable knowledge and experience

  • A degree in a STEM subject
  • The ability to write clearly for a general interest audience while delving into relevant scientific detail with rigour
  • A good understanding of media law
