Job summary

Bechtel is seeking an Environmental and Sustainability Specialist for a multi-year UK nuclear infrastructure programme. The role integrates environmental requirements into design and planning, providing expert input to design reviews and coordinating with suppliers to embed sustainability across deliverables.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Leads environmental and sustainability deliverables production and reviews (e.g., appraisals, energy and carbon plans).
  • Supports regulatory permitting compliance and BAT case reviews.
  • Contributes environmental input to risk and safety reviews and ISO 14001 compliance.
  • Ensures environmental deliverables meet project certification requirements.

Project Overview:

The Customer AWE:

For more than 75 years, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous at Sea Deterrent. They use nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counterterrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities. Like Bechtel, they create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything they do. From building state-of-the-art facilities, to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, the management of Environment, Safety, Health and Wellbeing underpins all activities at AWE.

Project Summary

Bechtel is collaborating with AWE as an integrated team to deliver the preliminary design for the facilities within the Future Materials Campus. Since 2023, Bechtel has provided delivery and technical support, ensuring the project is completed on schedule and within budget.

Job Summary:

This position is for an Environmental and Sustainability Specialist working a multi-year contract on a United Kingdom nuclear infrastructure programme, for which Bechtel is providing project management and engineering services. The programme is at the conceptual design phase and represents a multi-billion-pound investment in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.

You will integrate environmental requirements into design and planning documents, provide environmental input to design reviews, and influence engineering disciplines and suppliers to ensure those requirements are carried through to approved deliverables. This is a role for someone who works independently, develops their own approaches to complex problems, and is confident acting as the recognised environmental authority for the programme.

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership".

Major Responsibilities:
  • Leads the production and technical review of Environmental and Sustainability deliverables, including sustainability appraisals, BREEAM or equivalent assessments, energy and carbon plans, and registers of environmental aspects and impacts.

  • Supports the BAT specialist in demonstrating compliance with environmental permitting requirements, providing environmental data, assessment input and review of the Best Available Techniques (BAT) case.

  • Contributes environmental input to formal risk and safety reviews where environmental impacts are in scope.

  • Works within an ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System, ensuring environmental deliverables and records meet project and certification requirements.

  • Reviews deliverables from other disciplines and from suppliers during project execution to confirm that environmental and sustainability requirements have been adequately incorporated.

  • Interprets and integrates environmental requirements in the design, planning documents, risk assessment, and program execution.

  • Supports the environmental elements of informal studies and technical briefing with customers, suppliers, and other departments and disciplines.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • A recognised bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university related to environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources.

  • Ideally you will have 8+ years years of relevant experience.

  • Chartership with the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) or similar.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Working knowledge of sustainability assessment methodologies BREEAM or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting processes and the responsibilities of the applicable regulatory agencies

  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 and Environmental Management Systems, including environmental monitoring and reporting procedures.

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and organisational skills, with the attention to detail needed to identify and document environmental impacts.

  • Relevant industrial experience; General nuclear experience an advantage.

  • Must be able to obtain a SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.

Other

The role will be based primarily at Aldermaston UK, however travel to Bechtel’s London office (near Covent Garden) may also be required. Flexibility in work locations includes three days per week working at the project site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office. This arrangement will change as project needs adjust.

The position is open to United Kingdom (UK) Nationals only.

This position is also subject to a successful interview and agreement upon terms and conditions of employment.
