Project Overview

For more than 75 years, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous at Sea Deterrent. They use nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counterterrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities. Like Bechtel, they create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything they do. From building state‑of‑the‑art facilities to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, the management of Environment, Safety, Health and Wellbeing underpins all activities at AWE.

Bechtel is collaborating with AWE as an integrated team to deliver the preliminary design for the facilities within the Future Materials Campus. Since 2023, Bechtel has provided delivery and technical support, ensuring the project is completed on schedule and within budget.

Job Summary

This position is for a Senior Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation Engineer who will work a multi‑year on a United Kingdom (UK) nuclear infrastructure programme for which Bechtel are providing the Project Management and Engineering services. The project is in conceptual design phases driving a multi‑billion investment in nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities.

The Senior Engineer will be a proactive and driven individual who will support the Engineering Managers via the B&S Project Engineer as the technical representative for engineering activities. You will assist in the engineering design efforts, which may include the delivery of technical documents, execution of engineering schedule activities, quality checks, and overall project delivery. You will be involved in preparing technical reports, studies, design, calculations using engineering software and supporting systems, and procurement documentation. You will participate in design reviews and assure comments are addressed by facilitating their resolution to the satisfaction of the reviewers for the delivery of approved products. In addition, you will review and coordinate the deliverables of junior electrical control, and instrumentation engineers within the B&S and the P&E teams.

You will have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems. You will also help others and respond to requests for help in solving technical or procedural problems or issues. You will be responsible for assisting with discipline work process execution in a technically adequate manner and in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.

"This position is designated as part‑time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in‑person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership."

Major Responsibilities
  • Plan and conduct independent Electrical, Control and Instrumentation work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of relevant engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
  • Execute Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Telecoms deliverables according to a set of requirements and design criteria utilising approved procedures, practices, and codes and standards.
  • Create Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Telecoms plans, specifications, and drawings to support facility designs to a RIBA 3 development.
  • Support studies into the environmental impacts and sustainability of the proposed design / construction process.
  • Coordinate Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Telecoms efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendors, contractors and other functional groups.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and review designs, studies, reports, and proposals.
  • Participate in 3D Model reviews.
  • Participate in safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP), as well as reviewing compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
  • Review and coordinate deliverables with other disciplines, and suppliers during the execution of the project, to ensure that design intent has been adequately incorporated into the facility design.
  • Identify issues (risks and value improvement opportunities) and help clarify areas of complexity during all phases of the architectural design work.
  • Review and coordinate the deliverables of junior electrical control and instrumentation engineers.
  • Support informal studies and technical briefing with customers, suppliers, and other departments and disciplines.
Education And Experience Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Automation / Controls / Instrumentation, Electro‑Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering (or related subject) from an accredited university or college.
  • A minimum of 15 years’ progressive Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering experience.
Required Knowledge And Skills
  • Experience working in a nuclear or other highly regulated environments.
  • Experience working with multi‑disciplinary teams in a project delivery environment.
  • Chartership with the IET (or similar).
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, design criteria, guides & procedures and codes relevant to electrical, control and instrumentation discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical, control, instrumentation and telecoms discipline engineering techniques, the design of engineered systems, and engineering and design calculations.
  • Prior experience in industrial process facility design preferred.
  • Knowledge of control system verification to recognised standards, for example BS 61508.
  • Ability to read and understand building drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of CAD design.
  • Knowledge of NavisWorks.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Relevant industrial experience. General nuclear experience a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain a SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.
Other
  • The role will be based primarily at Aldermaston UK, however travel to Bechtel’s London office (near Covent Garden) may also be required. Flexibility in work locations includes three days per week working at the project site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office. This arrangement will change as project needs adjust.
