Job description

Are you keen to work somewhere that’s stimulating and friendly, with loads of opportunities for growth and plenty of freedom to make a real impact? This could be the place for you!

We are looking for an Enterprise Risk Manager to join us at INSHUR! We’re based in sunny Brighton (sea, chips, and seagulls included), and our company embraces a hybrid working model, allowing you to thrive in both collaborative office settings and the comfort of your own home. You’ll have the opportunity to work remotely while also connecting with your colleagues at our Brighton office at least twice a month, fostering a dynamic and supportive environment.

Supported by (and reporting to) the General Counsel, you'll be joining a friendly team of 5 who believe that a strong culture of risk and compliance goes beyond adhering to rules and regulations and must be integrated with everything we do. How we conduct ourselves is as critical to INSHUR’s success as making the best products available to our customers.

We value high performance and care deeply about making INSHUR a place where everyone is building something special, that we can all be proud of, while enjoying the ride.

What You'll Do

As our Enterprise Risk Manager, you will be a champion of risk, driving a proactive risk culture and embedding a strong risk mindset across the business. You will oversee operational risk management and internal controls, ensuring clear and effective risk reporting. Collaborating closely with Risk Owners, you will monitor our evolving risk profile, identify emerging threats, and stay ahead of internal and external developments that could impact our operations. Your role will be pivotal in shaping a risk-aware organisation that balances compliance with strategic growth.

You’ll Be Working On
  • Driving Risk Strategy: Supporting the UK Chief Executive, UK Board, and UK senior management in delivering the Risk Management Plan.
  • Overseeing Operational Risk: Reviewing risk profiles, key indicators, and incident responses to ensure robust risk management.
  • Enhancing Risk Frameworks: Strengthening risk identification, assessment, and control processes while embedding strong governance.
  • Leading Risk Assessments: Facilitating workshops, overseeing self-assessments, and engaging with stakeholders to evaluate and mitigate risks.
  • Collaborating Across Teams: Working with business units to embed a consistent and pragmatic risk management approach.
  • Managing Risk Appetite: Ensuring risk exposure aligns with business objectives and taking action where risks exceed appetite.
  • Handling Risk Events: Investigating incidents, conducting root-cause analysis, and implementing control improvements.
  • Strengthening Assurance: Reinforcing the control environment by working closely with key stakeholders.
  • Driving Efficiency: Identifying opportunities to digitise, automate, and streamline risk processes.
  • Risk Reporting & Governance: Supporting risk reporting for committees and boards, contributing to emerging risk assessments, and facilitating decision-making through governance and committee management.

While we prioritize aptitude and passion over a strict checklist of requirements, we've outlined a core set of skills we believe will lead to success in this role. To clarify, we’ve categorized them into “essentials to thrive in the role” and “additional skills that could set you apart”.

We'd love to hear from you if you have

…these essentials to thrive in the role;

  • Enterprise Risk Management Expertise: Ideally within general or commercial insurance, though other financial services experience will be considered.
  • Balancing Risk & Growth: Strong awareness of how to effectively balance risk, control, and business growth.
  • Innovative Thinking: A curious and proactive mindset, with a passion for generating new ideas and improving risk processes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Strong ability to influence, collaborate, and engage with key stakeholders across the business.
  • Risk Assurance Experience: Proven experience in conducting thematic risk assurance assessments and identifying key areas of improvement.
  • Attention to Detail: A meticulous approach to risk management, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in assessments and reporting.

…these additional skills that could set you apart

  • Scale-Up Experience: Experience working in a start-up scale-up or other fast-paced environment, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and adapt to change.
  • Commercial Motor Knowledge: Understanding of commercial motor insurance products and their associated risks, helping you hit the road at speed.

You’ll love it here if you:

Thrive navigating ambiguity and finding clarity in uncertain situations.

Take pride in being accountable and owning your responsibilities.

Enjoy a fast-paced environment where change happens quickly.

Are solutions-focused and driven to overcome challenges.

Embrace resilience and adapt to setbacks with a positive attitude.

Are intellectually curious, constantly seeking to learn, explore new ideas, and not afraid to question and improve your understanding.

You may not enjoy working here if:

Prefer a more structured, slow-moving environment.

Feel most comfortable when tasks and processes are clearly defined from the start.

Struggle with handling multiple challenges at once or adapting to frequent changes.

What to expect from the process:

Screen & Intro: 30-minute video call with the Talent Team to discuss the role and your experience.

First Interview: 60-minute video call with the General Counsel and Insurance Director, including technical questions and an opportunity for you to ask questions.

Case Study: A brief take-home task followed by an interview with our UK Chief Executive and Director of People to assess company fit and answer any final questions you may have.
